Jess froze in shock. She assumed Iris was simply a bold newcomer who didn’t understand the situation.
Quickly, she tugged at Iris’s sleeve twice.
“Don’t be so direct. You just got here. Don’t make enemies.”
The R&D Director was immediately offended. He shot Iris a vicious glare.
“And who exactly are you?”
Afraid Iris would get dragged into the conflict because of her, Jess hurriedly stood up.
“I’m sorry, Director Smith. She’s just a new intern. She doesn’t understand anything. Please don’t take it personally.”
“The entire ingredient list is flawed.” Ignoring her, Iris continued calmly. “With this
formulation, producing a stable lip gloss is impossible unless you’ve added a significant amount of heavy-metal colorants.”
The moment she finished speaking, Director Smith’s face turned pale. How could a new intern know something like that?
Still, he stubbornly refused to back down.
“What nonsense are you talking about?” He slammed a hand on the table. “Our team spent countless sleepless nights developing this formula! You’re just an intern. Whatever little bit you’ve learned in school doesn’t apply here!”
He pointed at her. “And you’re demanding additional testing? What qualifications do you have?”
Turning toward Supervisor Zedd, he barked: “How was someone like this even hired?”
“Alright, everyone calm down.” Supervisor Zedd immediately stepped in. “Iris, apologize to Director Smith.”
His tone carried a hint of warning.
“Director Smith has been with the company for years. You’re not even part of R&D. Why are you attacking him the moment you arrive?”
Truthfully, he was trying to protect her. He had finally found an intern he liked.

Unfortunately, she seemed to have no idea how the workplace operated.
Now the entire conference room was staring at Iris.
As the center of attention, she remained completely unbothered.
Resting one elbow on the table, she turned her chair toward the presentation screen.
Then she reached into her bag and pulled out a compact device.

It resembled a handheld scanner used during examinations, though much smaller and more sophisticated.
“This is a heavy-metal detection scanner.” She held it up. “Apply a sample of the lip gloss here, and it can analyze the formula composition.”
Her gaze landed on Director Smith. “Would you like to try it?”
Director Smith stared at the device.
What kind of nonsense was this?
A scanner that could detect heavy-metal colorants?
If something like that existed, people in the cosmetics industry would have heard about it long
ago.
Clearly she was bluffing and trying to scare him into admitting the formula was flawed.
“Fine!” He snatched the device. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”
Iris stood and walked to the front of the room. She briefly explained how to operate it.
At the same time, she got a closer look at the new lip gloss.
The color wasn’t nearly as remarkable as the R&D team had claimed.
In fact, she was beginning to suspect some of them might secretly be working for a competitor and intentionally sabotaging Venus Cosmetics’ reputation.
Director Smith held the surprisingly heavy scanner.
Watching Iris calmly explain its functions made him increasingly uneasy.
Still, he forcefully suppressed the feeling.
It looked convincing.

That didn’t mean it was real.
Following her instructions, he applied a small amount of lip gloss to the testing surface.
Immediately, the indicator light illuminated.
A countdown appeared on the screen.
Three.
Two.
One.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
The indicator suddenly turned bright red and began flashing wildly.
A mechanical voice echoed through the conference room.
“Test results: Heavy-metal colorants significantly exceed safety standards. Excessive substances detected: Lead. Mercury. Aluminum.”
The room fell silent.
Then the message repeated.
Again.
And again.
Director Smith desperately fumbled with the device, trying to turn it off.
Unfortunately, Iris hadn’t told him how.
The warning continued broadcasting throughout the room.
“How is that possible?!” His face turned red. “Your stupid machine must be broken!”
Without arguing, Iris took out a lipstick from her bag.
She applied a sample and ran another test.
Beep.
This time the indicator turned green.
