A drunken customer wandered toward the back of the bar and noticed silhouettes by the rear exit. Pointing in their direction, he shouted,
“Hey! Who’s there?”
Iris reacted immediately. With a quick sidestep, she slipped behind a pile of storage boxes. before anyone could spot her.
Stella wasn’t nearly as fast. Left with no better option, she steeled herself and answered,
“I am a staff, is something wrong?”
“Why’s the back door open? You’re letting all the cold air out! Do you people even know how to run a business?”
The man staggered closer, grumbling under his breath. But the nearer he got, the stranger something felt.
Aside from the woman in the wheelchair…
Why did the other figure look so familiar?
“I remember now! You’re-”
Before he could finish, Iris silently emerged from the shadows behind him and struck the back of his neck with a precise chop.
His eyes rolled back, and he collapsed to the floor without a sound.
Stella jumped when Iris seemed to appear out of nowhere. “When did you get downstairs?”
“Are you planning to leave the door open all night?”
Jack finally snapped out of his daze and hurried over to shut the door.
“This is…”
His eyes immediately filled with hostility as they landed on the unfamiliar woman. Instinctively, he grabbed Stella’s hand and hid slightly behind her, looking ready to bolt at any second.
“She’s my friend. Let’s head back upstairs first.”
Employees occasionally came out through the back entrance for fresh air or to take out the

trash. It was only a matter of time before someone else came by.
Fortunately, the elevator was close.

Inside the bar, another round of music had the crowd dancing wildly. The atmosphere was electric, and no one paid any attention to the three people quietly making their way through a corner of the room.
Stella led them back to the private room they’d used earlier and locked the door behind them.
Ruins Bar itself wasn’t hostile toward Jack.
But there was no telling whether one of the customers inside wanted him dead.
They couldn’t afford to let their guard down.
Jack’s eyes darted around the room before he crouched beside Stella, dropping to one knee as he gripped her shoulders.
“Can you tell me where the files are now?”
The documents in his possession involved the power struggle between two major factions in Lystra.
Both sides were hunting him.
One wanted the files and therefore needed him alive.
The other had been implicated by the evidence and wanted both him and the files erased forever.
Unfortunately, he’d fallen into the hands of the latter.
Fortunately, he’d prepared for that possibility.
Knowing how dangerous this would be, he’d had Stella retrieve the files, encrypt them, and hide them somewhere safe.
He had used her as his shield to buy himself this chance.
Leaning against the door, Iris silently watched the two of them embracing, her expression as cold as ice.
As Jack bent down, her eyes caught a tiny device clipped to his belt. A small red indicator light blinked steadily.
The seed of suspicion had already been planted.

Now everything depended on the choice Stella would make.
Held in Jack’s arms as he whispered into her ear, asking where the files were hidden, Stella couldn’t shake the inexplicable discomfort his closeness stirred inside her.
“What’s wrong, Stella?”
Seeing her hesitate, Jack unconsciously tightened his grip on her shoulders.
“Ow!”
Startled, he quickly let go. “Sorry. I’m just anxious. Every minute we waste gives them another chance.”
A moment ago, he’d clearly seen the hesitation in her eyes. He gently cupped the back of her head and rested his forehead against hers.
“Stella… after everything we’ve been through, you still don’t believe I love you?”
Her body trembled.
Slowly, she lifted her eyes to the face she knew so well.
“I used all my savings to buy us a house in one of the nearby coastal cities. The renovations are almost finished. I decorated it exactly the way you like. There’s a huge terrace where we can grill your favorite barbecue. I even put the deed in your name.”
“It’s your birthday present.”
“Jack…” Her voice caught in her throat as she threw her arms around him. “I shouldn’t have doubted you. The files are buried beneath the tree behind our old house. I’ll go with you.”
A silent sigh escaped Iris.
Jack hugged her tightly.
Then, lowering his voice so only Stella could hear, he added, “Your friend knows too much. She has to come with us.”
Stella turned to look at Iris.
At that exact moment, Iris looked back at her.

“I’m leaving with Jack.” Rolling her wheelchair over to Iris, Stella smiled. “I don’t know if my brother ever mentioned it, but I’m actually a pretty good bartender. Before I leave, let me make you one last drink. Would you rather wait here, or come downstairs with us?”
‘Looks like some underworld boss conducting business,‘ she thought.
“Is someone important in that private room?”
Stella glanced over as well.
