Stella’s mind went completely blank.

She sat there frozen.

The men loved seeing that devastated expression on her face, so they kept rubbing salt into the wound.

“When we caught him, the first thing he said was that everything was your doing. He volunteered to hand you over in exchange for his own life.”

“Tsk, tsk.” Another man laughed. “A scumbag like that, and you’re still hopelessly devoted to him. You’re practically Wife of the Year.”

Their mocking laughter echoed around the vehicle.

To Stella, the world seemed to blur and spin.

Their voices twisted into grotesque ghosts circling around her, clawing at her ears until she wanted to scream.

“Stop it!”

She tried to rush over and confront Jack.

In her fury, she completely forgot about her injured legs.

The instant she tried to stand, she collapsed face–first onto the floor.

Beside her, Iris used the opportunity to let herself fall against the window, slumping over as if still unconscious.

No one bothered helping Stella. If anything, the laughter grew even louder.

“Is she an idiot or what? Jack really hit the jackpot finding someone this gullible.”

Hidden behind the seatback, Iris’s eyelashes fluttered.

She slowly opened her eyes just a fraction.

Ignoring everyone else, Stella dragged herself across the floor with both hands until she reached Jack.

“…Is it true?” Her voice trembled. “You traded me… for your freedom?”

“And for a nice payday, too! Enough money to keep him comfortable for the rest of his life.”

Jack stood and gently helped Stella back into the seat beside the door. He settled her down with practiced tenderness.

“Jack…”

There was still a sliver of hope in her tear–filled eyes.

“I’ll only believe what you tell me.”

He cupped her face.

Slowly…

He leaned closer.

Stella closed her eyes.

But the kiss she imagined never came.

Instead, his familiar voice whispered beside her ear.

“Stella… you actually thought I’d marry a cripple?”

Her eyes flew open.

She met the mocking amusement in his

gaze.

“Wake up. If you hadn’t been useful, why would I ever have dated you?”

From the very beginning, he had only been using her.

Jack returned to the back row.

The front of the limousine was left with only the unconscious Iris and a completely shattered Stella.

“I’m sorry…” Holding Iris in her arms, Stella quietly sobbed. “I should’ve listened to you… I should’ve gone back with you to see my brother…”

She had trusted the wrong person.

And because of that…

She had dragged her brother’s friend into danger as well.

“So…” A calm voice suddenly interrupted her. “Are you ready to leave now?”

Stella jumped in fright.

She looked down.

Iris was staring at her calmly.

The men in the back were busy playing cards, their voices loud enough to drown out everything else.

They had been tossed into the second row.

The driver couldn’t see them.

The men in the back couldn’t either.

One woman supposedly couldn’t stand.

The other supposedly couldn’t wake up.

No one was watching them.

“…Can we still escape?”

The moment the words left Stella’s mouth, Iris calmly brought both hands out from behind her

back.

The ropes were already gone.

She pulled out her phone.

Stella’s eyes widened.

“Y–You… when did you get loose?”

Iris didn’t answer. She opened a live map, studied it for two seconds, then quickly typed a message and turned the screen toward Stella.

[When we enter the tunnel, climb onto my back immediately. Hold on tight.]

Leaving Stella to process the plan, Iris turned around and peered through the gap between the seats to assess everyone behind them.

One gang boss.

Four subordinates.

Jack.

The driver up front.

One of the men in the back was carrying a knife.

She silently calculated the fastest way to deal with all of them.

The tunnel drew closer.

Stella had finally made up her mind.

‘If I stay here, I’ll die anyway. I might as well trust her. Maybe… there’s still a chance.‘

She deliberately sniffled a few more times before quietly switching seats with Iris and wrapping both arms around Iris’s neck.

“Don’t let go,” Iris murmured.

The limousine entered the tunnel.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Suddenly-

BANG!

The gang boss sat upright. Someone beside him let out a muffled grunt, as if they’d been hit by an incredibly heavy punch.

A blur shot toward him.

Smack!

The boss reacted instantly, raising both arms to block several lightning–fast strikes.

Iris was still carrying Stella on her back.
