Chapter 145 Poisoned
P:
Not far away, the Young family’s eldest daughter, Rumi Young, watched the two of them standing close together with a thoughtful expression.

“Aunt Rumi, you saw them too, didn’t you?” Chloe had somehow appeared beside her and followed her gaze.
“That’s Ares… but the young woman with him is…”
No matter how hard Rumi tried, she couldn’t remember ever seeing Iris before.
The Young family hosted countless social gatherings every year, yet she’d never met this girl.
Could the rumors be true? Had Ares really fallen for an ordinary woman outside their social circle… and even brought her into the Young residence?
“The other one is my older sister,” Chloe said softly. “She was the biological daughter my parents lost years ago. I’m actually not related to them by blood.”
“I see.” Rumi nodded. “That explains it.”
She glanced at Chloe. “Now that your sister’s back… are you unhappy?”
Rumi and her husband had only one daughter, Julie.
Over the years, she’d watched the children of the Noir and Barclay families grow up and had always treated them like family.
“My sister is very kind. She never tries to take anything from me, and my parents love her very much too.”
The two chatted for a while longer.
Chloe knew perfectly well that Rumi had a soft spot for pitiful stories.
So she deliberately phrased everything in a way that sounded generous and selfless.
She secretly looked up.
As expected…
Rumi’s expression subtly changed.
A satisfied smile tugged at Chloe’s lips.

Chapter 145 Poisoned
The Young residence was bustling that day.
Guests with ties to the family continued arriving.

Servants hurried back and forth serving drinks and organizing the mountain of condolence gifts.
After only a brief conversation with Chloe, Rumi was called away again to greet more visitors.
But those few minutes had already left her with an unfavorable first impression of Iris.
Family after family was escorted upstairs to see Evelyn Young. She lay peacefully on the hospital bed with her eyes closed. Her hair, now completely silver, had been carefully braided.
She looked less like someone on the verge of death than a sleeping elderly woman.
Two physicians stood nearby on standby.
Visitors came in one after another to speak quietly with the Young family.
Most of them had known Evelyn in healthier days.
They wanted to see her while she was still alive–not after she’d become a cold body lying inside a coffin.
After exchanging a few words with Rumi and her husband, Richard led Eleanor, Iris, and Chloe into the room.
“Vincent called,” Richard said. “He’s already on his way back and should arrive within the next few days.”
Rumi smiled. “Our families don’t stand on ceremony. He can come whenever he arrives.”
Then she glanced toward Ares, who was talking with Iris across the room.
“As for your daughters…” She paused. “I know you’ve finally found your biological daughter. But you must treat both girls equally. Girls are sensitive. You have to be fair to both of them.”
Her reminder was subtle.
Then she excused herself, leaving Richard and Eleanor exchanging confused looks.
“What was Rumi trying to say?” Richard frowned. “Treat them equally? She always speaks in riddles.”
Following Rumi’s train of thought–or what she believed it to be–Eleanor nodded.

“I think she’s reminding us not to neglect Iris. She just came home. We should make up for all the love she missed growing up.”
“Of course!” Richard replied without hesitation. “We should give her ten times–no, a hundred times what she missed.”
The couple’s interpretation couldn’t have been further from Rumi’s actual meaning.
The Barclay family entered Evelyn Young’s room together with the Noirs.
Theodore Barclay looked at his old friend lying motionless in bed and sighed heavily. “Is it really only a matter of days now?”
One of the attending physicians answered patiently for what was probably the hundredth time.
“At most… one week.”
A week…
Could they still find the legendary Dr. Zero in time?
Theodore wasn’t optimistic. His heart felt heavy.
Ares and Iris stood nearby supporting him as he approached the bedside.
Only now, standing this close, did Iris get a proper look at Evelyn Young.
Earlier she’d only managed a brief glance through the doorway.
While Theodore sat beside the bed speaking softly to his friend, Iris and Ares stepped back and stood shoulder to shoulder behind him.
“You want to check Grandma Young’s pulse?” Ares asked quietly.
“I do.”
From Evelyn’s condition alone, Iris already had two possible diagnoses in mind.
But she wouldn’t know which was correct until she examined her pulse.
Ares nodded before turning toward the doctors and the Young family. “Let Iris examine Grandma Young’s pulse. She has medical training.”
The room immediately fell silent.

Could a young woman who’d only recently been welcomed back into the Noir family really be more capable than internationally renowned specialists?

Iris knows medicine. She was the one who performed Emma’s surgery.
