Fake Daughter Is The Real Legend

Chapter 164 The Question

Vanessa was momentarily speechless.

She opened and closed her mouth several times, managing only a stammered, “Y–You…”

Finished

Ares didn’t let up. “By that logic, Mrs. Sutton, you’ve negotiated plenty of business deals with men over the years. I suppose that means your private life must be quite colorful as well.”

Vanessa’s face cycled from green to white.

His expression turned cold. “If I remember correctly, Iris was your adopted daughter. So this is the Sutton family’s idea of good family values? Publicly slandering the daughter you raised for twenty years?”

When Ares stopped deliberately softening his demeanor, his naturally deep voice carried an overwhelming sense of authority.

Vanessa didn’t dare say another word. She had assumed Iris had returned to some poor, insignificant hometown. Who would’ve thought she’d end up with someone like this backing her?

“As her fiancé,” Ares continued, “I’ll love her and cherish her.”

“But the people who once called themselves her family are trying to humiliate her in front of everyone.”

He smiled politely at the mother and daughter.

“I don’t think losing a single business partnership is nearly enough.”

After saying that, he took out his phone.

“Julian.”

His tone was calm.

“From this point forward, every company under the Barclay Group is to reject any future business involving the Sutton family in Kingsley.”

This wasn’t the first time these two had deliberately come looking for trouble.

It was time they learned a lesson.

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

Chapter 164 The Question

She studied Ares uncertainly.

Could he really have that kind of influence?

She’d never even heard of the Barclay Group.

Then again…

Not hearing of something didn’t mean it didn’t exist.

It usually just meant you weren’t in the circles where it mattered.

Trying to sound confident, though without any of the arrogance she’d had earlier, she asked one last time,

“Iris, I’ll ask you one final time. Are you going to call Miss Fleming or not?”

“No.” Iris answered without the slightest hesitation.

Then she looked toward Aunt Layla.

“Aunt Layla, are the chestnut cakes ready?”

As though waking from a dream, Aunt Layla hurriedly replied,

“Yes! They’re all packed!”

She handed the two wrapped boxes of chestnut cakes to Emily.

“You young people should get going. And stop crowding my doorway. I’ve still got plenty of

work to do.”

Olivia stared at Aunt Layla, suddenly realizing something. “You’re… not my sister’s biological mother?”

Aunt Layla rolled her eyes so dramatically they nearly disappeared into the back of her head.

“Do Iris and I look anything alike? I wish I had a daughter as wonderful as her.”

Vanessa froze. “Then why didn’t you say so sooner?”

“I never said this was my house.” Iris shrugged.

“Let’s go.”

She reached for the boxes of chestnut cakes, only for Ares to take them from Emily first.

Chapter 164 The Question

“I’ve got them. Let’s head back.”

Vanessa refused to give up. She stepped in front of Iris.

“I thought your hometown was in Ashford County. So where exactly do you live?”

Before Iris could answer, Ares guided her around Vanessa.

As they passed, he gave Vanessa a cool glance.

“If you continue harassing her… I won’t hesitate to call the police.”

Prushed

Olivia hurriedly grabbed her mother. She’d already spent one humiliating visit at the police station. She never wanted a second.

Catching Vanessa’s eye, she silently signaled toward the departing car.

If they’re heading home… we’ll just follow them.‘

Watching them leave, Aunt Layla muttered to herself, “Iris’s fiancé doesn’t seem bad. He actually knows how to protect her. He’s nothing like those other men from outside.”

A nearby neighbor nodded. “I was thinking the same thing.”

Back in the car, Emily sat in the rear seat holding the two boxes of chestnut cakes.

This time, Ares was driving.

Vanessa’s driving skills were mediocre at best. She’d only been following them for two minutes before Ares noticed the tail.

Meanwhile, Vanessa thought she was being incredibly discreet.

Then Ares casually turned a corner.

The next second, his car disappeared completely.

“Huh? Where did they go?”

“They were just here!” Olivia looked around in confusion. “Where… are we?”

They had blindly followed Ares onto the wrong road.

Now they were completely lost.

“The villagers in Willow Village didn’t seem to dislike me nearly as much as they should have.”

“I was…”
