Chapter 196 Undercover Assistant
Samuel and Vanessa stood with their backs to her, quietly discussing Vivian.
The moment they heard footsteps behind them, both fell silent.

They were about to head upstairs when they turned around and found themselves face–to–face with Iris.
Vanessa blurted out, “You’re still here?”
“The person responsible for hurting my aunt hasn’t been found yet.” Iris’s voice was cold. “I’m not leaving.”
Samuel glanced upstairs. “Is Noah up there? We wanted to talk to him about something.”
Freshly awake and still carrying a bit of morning irritability, Iris had no patience for games.
“You mean ask him where Aunt Vivian hid the inheritance?”
“How could you say that?” Vanessa immediately exploded. “We’re concerned about our family! Not everyone is as calculating as you!”
“If you were truly concerned,” Iris replied calmly, “you wouldn’t be disturbing Noah. And you certainly wouldn’t have cornered and interrogated him yesterday.”
She brushed past them. “I changed the locks. Even if you stole Aunt Vivian’s house keys, you won’t be able to get inside.”
“You-!”
Samuel’s expression changed. He hadn’t expected Iris to be so meticulous. She had even figured out that they had secretly taken Vivian’s keys during the chaos at the hospital.
Their original plan had been to search Vivian’s apartment for clues about the inheritance. Now that plan had completely fallen apart.
Vanessa rolled up her sleeves and stormed after Iris.

Samuel barely had time to react before hurrying after her.

She was halfway to the stairwell, ready to grab Iris and demand an explanation, when she suddenly froze.
A luxury car was parked outside the apartment complex.
A tall, handsome man leaned casually against it, smiling as he spoke with Iris.
Several bags of expensive nutritional supplements hung from his hand.
The anger drained from Vanessa instantly.
Ares Barclay.
Why was he here too?
As if sensing her stare, Ares lifted his gaze.
His eyes swept over Vanessa and Samuel.
The single glance made both of them stiffen.
“Let’s go.”
Samuel immediately grabbed Vanessa’s arm.
“No need to rush. We can come back another day.”
Iris wouldn’t stay in Kingsley forever. Once she left, they’d still have opportunities to approach Noah.
Outside-
“Why do you look so exhausted?”
Ares’s voice softened as he looked at Iris.
“Didn’t sleep well?”
“These are for Noah.” He lifted the bags. “Studying burns a lot of brainpower.”

Iris nodded. “Want to come upstairs? Though I should warn you, it’s a little run- down.”
“Sure.”
Ares didn’t care in the slightest.
Carrying the bags, he followed her inside.
Halfway up the stairs, Iris suddenly remembered that Zane was still in the apartment.
She quickly sent him a message.
The moment he saw it, Zane fled through the back stairwell without hesitation.
For the first time in his life, he desperately wished Iris would stop hiding her identity.
Maybe then he could finally stop sneaking around like an undercover assistant.
When the door opened, Noah emerged from his room.
The moment he saw Ares, he froze.
Wasn’t this Iris’s friend?
Why was he here too?
Though confused, Noah could tell they were close, so he didn’t ask questions. He accepted the breakfast Ares had brought, nodded politely, and carried it into the kitchen.
“Did they catch the person who hurt Aunt Vivian?”
Ares sat down on the faded old sofa. His tailored designer suit contrasted sharply with the worn furniture.
Oddly enough, it didn’t look out of place.
“They caught him.” Iris sat across from him. “But we suspect he has severe anger issues. And someone may be directing him from behind the scenes.”

Ares immediately understood. “Using someone like that creates the perfect situation. Either he gets a huge settlement. Or Aunt Vivian dies by accident.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Aunt Vivian probably controls part of the Hart family inheritance, doesn’t she?”
People like James made ideal tools. Even if they killed someone, they rarely received the harshest punishment. And if powerful people were backing them, getting them released would be even easier.
Within moments, Ares had pieced together almost the entire situation. His conclusions matched Iris’s almost perfectly.

[Miss Noir, you were right! Those men were all released on bail this morning! I tried to stop it, but I couldn’t.]

He couldn’t understand how a case with such overwhelming evidence had been brushed aside as a “misunderstanding.”
[Who picked up James?]
[Mayor Vaughn’s secretary.]
