Chapter 197 Mission Objective
“Are we really okay doing this?”
Mayor Vaughn’s secretary lowered his voice. The Davis family from Capital City had once saved the mayor’s life and helped him more than once over the years. They could practically be called his benefactors.
“We’d be in real trouble if I helped him,” Mayor Vaughn replied. “Did you forget what happened at Stellar Venture? Iris Noir is close to the CEO of Stellar Venture, and she’s also connected to Ares Barclay from Capital City. Compared to those two, who the hell are the Davises?”
After more than a decade navigating politics, he knew exactly which side carried more weight.
Besides, the Sutton family had already offended Stellar Venture CEO Zane Walker. He was even considering telling his son to break up with Vanessa Sutton’s daughter as soon as possible.
There was no way he was getting involved.
Left standing where he was, James stared blankly for a moment. By the time he snapped back to reality, even the exhaust from the mayor’s car had disappeared.
Furious, he kicked a stone off the roadside and stormed into a nearby restaurant. The moment he sat down, he called his family.
Before Mayor Vaughn’s car even returned to City Hall, his phone rang.
The caller was Mr. Davis from Capital City.
“Mayor Vaughn, James told me he was beaten for no reason and thrown into jail. What exactly happened?”
Alner’s voice carried obvious displeasure.
“Let me remind you, the Davis family has helped you countless times. We never asked for anything in return. The only thing we ever requested was that you look after James. He was only sent to Kingsley for a change of environment. How did things end up like this?”

Chapter 197 Mission Objective
“Mr. Davis, this really isn’t a matter of me refusing to protect him. Maybe you should ask him who he picked a fight with first.”
Alner Davis let out a dismissive laugh. “What’s there to be afraid of? Who in Kingsley has more authority than the mayor? And even if they do, the Davis family is backing him from Capital City. Who can’t we handle?”
“A friend of the CEO of Stellar Venture. And a friend of Ares Barclay.”
“..”
Silence filled the line.
Several long moments passed before Alner spoke.
For the first time, Mayor Vaughn almost laughed.
“I’ve told you who it is. There’s no way I dare interfere. If you really want revenge, you’ll have to handle it yourself.”
Alner squeezed a few words through clenched teeth. “That little bastard.”
After cursing James, he hung up.
At Vivian Hart’s house, Iris was giving Ares a tour at his request.
Ares noticed that whenever she talked about anything in the house, her voice became softer, almost nostalgic.
“You like this place more than the Sutton residence, don’t you?”
Iris nodded. “When I was little, I spent more time with my aunt than with them. She treated everyone kindly, and I learned a lot from her.”
Ares’s eyes landed on a handwritten menu taped to the wall. It listed several dishes, covered with edits and corrections.
Now he finally understood why Iris knew so much about cuisine. She had learned it from Vivian and later improved upon it herself.
“When Noah and I were kids, we were both pretty sickly and hated taking medicine, She started studying medicinal cooking to help us recover.”

Later, Iris met Jett Xu, and upon hearing this, Vivian studied traditional medicine under him, knowing that the East was famous for its medicinal herbs. This made her even more skilled at preparing medicinal meals.
The moment Iris thought of Vivian, a familiar ache settled in her chest.
James and everyone involved would pay for this.
Ares glanced at the message Julian Cross had just sent him.
“James is the second son of Alner Davis from Capital City. He got into trouble at school and was basically exiled to Kingsley. Mayor Vaughn was asked to look after him.”
“Alner Davis?”
The name meant nothing to Iris.
“He’s in the building materials business. His company has never been particularly successful. In Capital City, the Davis family sits somewhere in the lower–middle tier.”
Of course, a lower–middle–tier family in Capital City was still influential in Kingsley.
Knowing James, he had undoubtedly told Alner everything already.
“What are you planning to do next?” Ares asked.
Iris thought for a moment. “James definitely needs to pay for what he’s done. But we also have to find the people behind him.”
They had wanted Vivian dead.
Then her gaze drifted toward Noah’s room.
“Noah has his exam the day after tomorrow. We’ll wait until he finishes before heading to Capital City.”
Noah couldn’t speak. If those people were after the Hart family inheritance or Vivian herself, they might target him too.

“I should go. His sign language isn’t always standard. You won’t understand everything.”
Meanwhile, James was still sitting in the restaurant, expecting Mayor Vaughn to return after being scolded by Alner and pick him up.
Growing impatient, he called Alner again. “Why hasn’t that Vaughn guy come to get me yet?”
