Aaron sighed.

At best, he could save Vivian Hart’s hands and legs.

“That’s okay. Just do everything you can. I’ll handle the rest when I get back to Capital City.”
“I’ve had someone keeping an eye on James,” Ares said, glancing at the report on his phone. “He smashed a glass at a restaurant near the police station. Looks like the Davis family refused to help him.”
That was exactly what Iris had expected.
“Alner knows when to advance and when to retreat. As long as he stays out of it, dealing with James alone will be enough.”
She was still trying to figure out how to make someone like James reveal the person behind everything when Ares suddenly grabbed her arm and pulled her up from the couch.
She looked up and met his half–smiling gaze.
“You’ve been thinking about this all day. Let’s go out for a while and clear your head.”
Ares could tell she was getting trapped in her own thoughts. She might eventually find the answer that way, but it would wear her down.
“Noah said he lost his eraser. Let’s go buy him a new one.”
Ares glanced toward Noah.
The boy immediately understood what he was trying to do and nodded enthusiastically.
In such a short time, the two had somehow developed remarkable teamwork.
A few minutes later, Noah practically pushed Iris and Ares out the door.
They drove to the city bookstore.

“I’ll find a place to park. You go in first.”
“Okay.”
Iris entered the store alone.
There weren’t many stationery shops near the old apartment building, and most of them didn’t carry exam–approved supplies. The bookstore downtown had the widest selection.
She quickly found the brand of eraser Noah usually used. To be safe, she grabbed extra pencils, pens, and other supplies he might need.
The store was running a promotion, and many books on the second floor were discounted.
There was still plenty of time before they needed to head home.
Remembering that Noah had once mentioned wanting to learn guitar, Iris decided to pick out a few beginner books for him. After his entrance exams, he would finally have some free time.
The second–floor book section had recently been expanded. It was spacious, with every shelf clearly labeled.
She easily found the beginner guitar section and selected several books that would be perfect for someone just starting out.
“Olivia, you’re amazing! You’ve only been learning for such a short time, and you can already understand books this advanced!”
After grabbing the guitar books, Iris wandered over to the piano section.
To her surprise, she spotted the newest piano textbook from Capital University among the shelves.
Curious, she reached for it.
At the exact same moment, someone on the other side of the bookshelf reached for the same book.
As their hands touched the spine from opposite sides, Iris caught a glimpse of the person’s face through the gap.

Vanessa had brought Olivia to buy piano books.
The moment Vanessa picked up a book, she looked through the shelf–and saw Iris.
“Iris Noir? You-”
Olivia frowned and was about to speak.
Without a word, Iris slid the book back into place.
The gap in the shelf disappeared, blocking their view entirely.
Vanessa practically twitched whenever she heard Iris’s name these days.
“Iris Noir? Where?”
Olivia quickly adjusted her expression. “She’s on the other side of the shelf. But it seems like she doesn’t really want to see us.”
“Hmph. More like she doesn’t want to face reality. Nothing in the Sutton family belongs to her anymore!”
Without Samuel around, Vanessa had become even more reckless with her words. Whatever came to mind came straight out.

Holding two piano books, she tugged Vanessa toward the registers.
She had only started learning piano during summer break.
After studying violin for a while, she had decided that a Sutton heiress shouldn’t be limited to a single instrument, so she had turned her attention to piano.
Although she suggested leaving, Olivia’s eyes kept searching the store for Iris.
Iris was standing in another aisle, flipping through a book of piano sheet music.
As expected, the moment Vanessa saw Iris again, she couldn’t resist.
