The representative from Northbridge University immediately choked on his words.
“No, no–that’s not what I meant.”
“Isn’t Iris Noir here?”
“No,” Julie replied. “A doctor called her away a few minutes ago.”
Just moments earlier, Iris had been about to check her exam results when Xavier Hayes came to get her. The two of them had gone to the director’s office to discuss something.
Now, after finishing their conversation, Xavier was walking Iris back.
From a distance, he noticed the hospital room was packed with people.
Frowning, he headed over.
“The patient needs rest,” he said firmly. “Too many visitors at once isn’t appropriate.”
He was about to clear everyone out when he suddenly spotted Richard and Eleanor Noir among the crowd.
“Mr. Noir? Mrs. Noir? What are you all doing here?”
Eleanor looked just as confused. “These people all came looking for Iris.”
“Are you Iris Noir?”
One of the Capital University admissions officers immediately stepped forward.
“We’re from Capital University’s admissions office. We’d like to know whether you’re interested in applying to Capital University.”
The others snapped out of their surprise and began introducing themselves as well.
Individually, none of them were speaking very loudly.

Together, however, they created a constant wall of noise.
Questions.
Introductions.
Even camera flashes from the reporters.
The room was becoming increasingly chaotic.
Iris glanced toward Evelyn Young’s hospital bed, her expression darkening.
“Everyone.”
“The patient needs a quiet environment.”
“Please keep your voices down.”
Only then did the crowd realize where they were.
The room fell silent almost instantly.
Still, every pair of eyes remained fixed on Iris.
Across the room, Julie was holding Evelyn’s hand.
She was equally stunned by the scene unfolding around Iris.
Wasn’t Chloe supposed to be the top scorer?
Why had all these people come looking for Iris instead?

Could Chloe have said something bad about Iris on camera, prompting everyone to come confront her?
Julie’s imagination was running wild when she suddenly felt movement beneath her palm.
A finger moved.
Then lightly traced across her hand.
Her heart skipped a beat.

Since Iris had begun treatment, occasional involuntary finger movements had
become increasingly common.
But this felt different.
Julie looked down.
And froze.
Evelyn’s eyes were open.
At some point, she had awakened.
“Iris!”
“Grandma’s awake!”
Xavier was still trapped near the doorway with everyone else.
The moment he heard Julie’s shout, both he and Iris rushed to the bedside.
“You stay here,” Xavier said quickly. “I’ll get the doctors.”
After checking the nearby monitors, he immediately turned and sprinted out of the room.
Richard and Eleanor hurried over as well.
The admissions officers remained where they stood.
Following the family felt inappropriate.
But staying put made them feel completely unnecessary.
Fortunately, Xavier soon returned with a team of doctors.
“One of the nearby rooms just became available after a patient was discharged,” one doctor suggested.
“Why don’t the rest of you move there for now?”

With so many people crowding the room, it was the most practical solution.
Even Julie was ushered into the neighboring room.
Following behind Iris, she lowered her voice.
“What exactly is going on? Why are all these people looking for you?”
Then she suddenly remembered something.
Iris still hadn’t seen her exam results.
The page had only just loaded before Xavier pulled her away.
Julie grabbed the laptop from her assistant and looked at the score report.
“S–Level?”
She practically screamed.
Then she stared at the screen again, convinced she had misread it.
“S–Level?!”
One admissions officer looked at her oddly.
“That’s right.”
“Iris Noir received an S–Level rating.”
“The highest classification awarded by the examination board.”
He paused before adding,
