Chapter 276 The Selection
Iris had arrived early, but she still chose a seat in the very last row.

The incident with her admission letter yesterday had drawn far too much attention. Sitting up/front would only invite stares and whispers.
The back row was quieter.
What she hadn’t expected was that even from all the way back there, Professor Joe spotted/her immediately.
“Professor Joe?” Nathan thought there might be something wrong with the microphone and quickly looked up.
A moment ago, Professor Joe had been radiating his usual confidence on stage.
Now he looked as though his mind had gone completely blank.
It was the first time Nathan had ever seen him like this.
Unsure what to do, he called out again.
“Professor Joe? Are you alright?”
Professor Joe finally snapped out of it, though traces of shock still lingered in his eyes.
Why was Miss Zero here?
Had she come specifically to attend his lecture?
But this was a Capital University student–exclusive event. Everyone entering had to show a student ID.
How had she gotten in?
He cleared his throat twice and pretended the microphone had malfunctioned.
With so many people watching, he needed to focus on today’s lecture first.
Then his gaze met Iris’s once more across the auditorium.
A bold thought suddenly surfaced in his mind.
Could it be…
Had she actually enrolled at Capital University?
The emotions he had spent the entire previous night settling immediately became turbulent again.
Gabriela noticed something was off.

“Doesn’t Professor Joe seem a little strange today?” she whispered to the students around her.
“Now that you mention it, yeah.”
“Maybe he didn’t sleep well?”
The students could tell something was different about him, but none of them could guess wh
Soon everyone returned their attention to the lecture.
Not many freshmen had attended.
There were only three students sitting in Iris’s row.

After a few opening remarks, Professor Joe finally found his rhythm and returned to his usual teaching style.
Even so, his eyes continued drifting toward Iris every now and then.
“Next, I’d like three students to answer three questions.”
Normally he would randomly select student ID numbers.
Today, however, he pointed elsewhere.
“The three students in the last row. You can answer these.”
A wave of relief swept through the audience.
The questions weren’t particularly difficult, but being called on unexpectedly always made people nervous.
The three freshmen in the last row stood one after another.
The first couldn’t answer.
The second got the answer right but admitted she had guessed.
When it was Iris’s turn, her response aligned perfectly with Professor Joe’s own reasoning.
Her answer was flawless.
“You’re all freshmen?”
At last, Professor Joe found the opportunity he had been waiting for.
One of the students nodded.
“All three of us are freshmen.”
“Actually, first–years don’t have to attend these lectures,” Professor Joe said. “But your eagerness to learn deserves recognition.”

He smiled.
“Tell me your names and classes. I’ll award each of you one academic credit.”
The two other students looked delighted.
They had come to a lecture on a whim and somehow earned extra crèdit.
When it was Iris’s turn, she stood.
“Iris Noir.”
She gave a slight nod toward the stage.
The moment he heard her name, Professor Joe froze.
Iris Noir?
Miss Zero was Iris Noir?
Beside him, Nathan was equally stunned.
So Miss Zero was the national exam champion?
The media reports about the top scorer had never included a photograph.
Only the admissions office staff knew what Iris actually looked like. As for President Wade, although he had met her several times, she had always worn a face mask during their meetings. He had never seen her full face, so it wasn’t surprising that he failed to recognize her when they met again.
For a brief moment, Professor Joe sat motionless.
Then pure joy flooded his eyes.
Miss Zero was Iris Noir.
She had enrolled at Capital University.
And she had chosen Biomedical Sciences.
For him, this was nothing short of fantastic news.
(
“Professor Joe?”
Iris’s voice pulled him back to reality.
Only then did he recover and continue the lecture.
Did anyone else notice that Professor Joe suddenly got a lot happier after questioning those freshmen?”
Now that you mention … yeah.”
