Things were chaotic on Iris’s end.

Ms. Taylor was busy organizing the classroom, assigning exam rooms, and having everyone clear out their desks.

“The materials won’t be necessary. Over here, we-”

“Iris”

Several classmates called out to her from the doorway.

“I have to go. Whatever it is, let’s talk after the exams.”

Before Ares could respond, the call ended. He lowered the phone and listened to the disconnected tone. The words Good luck on the college entrance exam caught in his throat.

After a brief hesitation, he opened their chat window, typed those four words, and sent

them to her.

On the final night before the college entrance exam, review materials lay scattered across, Chloe’s desk. Yet she couldn’t focus on a single word. Instead, she sat staring at her phone, gripping it tightly.

On the screen was a simple reply from Mason:

[OK.]

After a full night’s sleep, Iris woke refreshed and energetic. Chloe, by contrast, had dark circles so severe that even heavy concealer couldn’t hide them.

“Good luck,” Richard said. “After the exams, Mom and Dad will take you girls on a trip.”

Neither Richard for Eleanor dared say much else. They were afraid of making the girls

nervous.

Originally, they had planned to drive them to the testing center themselves, but an urgent meeting had come up at the last minute. The family driver would have to take them instead.

As they stepped out of the villa, Iris noticed Chloe glancing at her from time to time.

“Wait a second, Sis.”

Chloe suddenly stopped.

“Could you wait here for the driver? I forgot something at home.”

Before Iris could answer, Chloe hurried back inside.

The moment she turned away, the gentle smile vanished from her face, replaced by an unreadable grin.

Iris paid it no mind. Lowering her head, she casually checked her company’s stock prices on her phone.

Then-

Whoosh.

A sack dropped over her head.

Strong hands grabbed her and dragged her away.

The driver pulled the car around, only to find Chloe waiting alone by the roadside.

“Where’s Miss Iris?” he asked.

Chloe shook her head. “I haven’t seen her either. But we’re running out of time. Why don’t we head to the exam center first and have Uncle Walter bring my sister later?”

Chloe climbed into the car. Only after it pulled away did she quietly let out a breath of relief.

Elsewhere, Ares was reviewing newly posted contracts on the Alliance’s secure mission board. Assignments were organized by rank, with lower–level jobs appearing near the bottom of the list.

As he scrolled through the latest postings, his expression suddenly hardened.

“Julian.”

Julian was halfway through making coffee.

“Yes?”

“Contact the Alliance immediately. Cancel the newest F–Class contract.”

Ares’s voice remained calm, but his eyes had turned cold.

“And dispatch whoever is closest to the old building in West Capital. Get Iris to the testing center.”

Julian straightened instantly, every trace of sleep vanishing.

How had the Alliance approved a contract involving Iris in the first place?

Fifteen minutes later, the regional coordinator for West Capital sent over a photo.

Ares studied it for a moment.

“She wasn’t there?”

At the testing center, Chloe arrived early and found her seat.

Chloe had seen her admission ticket before. That was exactly where Iris should have been sitting.

Students continued filing into the room, but the seat remained empty. As the clock ticked closer to the start of the exam, Chloe finally relaxed.X

It looked like Mason had succeeded.

Iris wasn’t going to take the exam.

The signal sounded, officially marking the beginning of the exam. As the proctors prepared to unseal the test packets, satisfaction flickered across Chloe’s face.

“I’m sorry, teachers. I got delayed on the way here.”

The familiar voice instantly froze her smile.

Chloe’s head snapped toward the door.

Iris.

Standing there.

For a moment, Chloe thought she was hallucinating.

Wasn’t Mason supposed to have taken care of everything? Afraid he couldn’t handle it. alone, he’d even hired people from an underground bounty network to assist with the kidnapping.

So how was she here?

“Come in quickly.”

One of the proctors looked relieved.
