Chapter 72: Love Is Letting Go
Kael’s POV

“Are those all the rogues?” I asked as Ethan threw one of them to the ground, his claws still out, eyes burning with that same feral light we all shared when the adrenaline refused to fade.
He exhaled hard, scanning the field. The smell of blood and burnt earth lingered thick in the air. I have to admit, Irina is a badass. Ethan told me she was the one who started the whole fire by using some gas leak.
If my Alpha somehow snatches her, he is in for a wild ride.
“Looks like it,” Ethan muttered, wiping a streak of crimson off his cheek. “But I can’t sense Aiden or-”
“Irina,” I finished for him, glancing around. The smoke still curled upward in lazy tendrils, and the silence that followed the battle was almost too heavy. I frowned. “Have any of you seen Alpha Aiden and Irina?”
“Luna Irina,” Ethan corrected sharply, straightening up.
Right, she was supposed to be his Luna after all.
I rolled my eyes. “Fine. Luna Irina. Have you seen them or not?”
He shook his head. “Last thing my Alpha told me was they were going after Julie.”
“How long did that happen?” I asked because the battle had lasted for at least an hour.
I have to admit, Kratos and some of the rogues who joined us later because of him were skillful fighters. Good enough to go against a fifty rogues.
A chill crawled down my spine.
I don’t doubt an Alpha. I’m sure if Derek were captured, he would find his way out, but I’m not so sure about Irina. I saw her training back in the pack and she…
Let’s say she is not the best.
Definitely not the worst, but considering Julie is a scheming b***h, I’m really worried about
her.
My Alpha is whipped; he wants Irina as his Luna even though they aren’t mates, and I’ve seen how much he has tried to fight Alpha Aiden for her.

Considering he is a new Alpha, he shouldn’t be going against Shadow Pack, the biggest freaking pack in the country.

Ethan’s eyes glazed, meaning he was trying to contact Aiden, but then they cleared. “I can’t find him…”
f**k. They must have been captured.
“Let’s go find-”
–
I didn’t get to finish. The ground trembled faintly heavy steps echoing from the smoke-covered path ahead. Every wolf within earshot turned their heads in unison.
And then we saw him.
–
Aiden emerged from the haze like a shadow pulled from a nightmare bloodied, without any freaking clothes, eyes glowing. In his arms…
My heart skipped.
He was carrying someone.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out who it was.
Irina…
“s**t,” I hissed under my breath, already moving, but Ethan grabbed my arm. “Wait.”
“What the hell do you mean, wait? Look at her!” I snapped, trying to shake him off. Irina’s body was limp against Aiden’s chest, her hair streaked with ash and blood, and every instinct in me screamed to make sure she was breathing.
But before I could take another step, a sound ripped through the air – a deep, guttural growl that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Aiden.
He bared his teeth, his wolf bleeding through so strongly, his aura crashed over us like a physical wave. I immediately bared my neck in submission.
He shouldn’t be threatened by me. I have a mate.
“But you don’t have a mark,” Ronny, my wolf, pointed out. “To him, you are an unmated Beta, and his mate is very naked.”
Hmmm…

“Maybe you are right,” I admitted.
“What would you do if Debbie were the one in your arms and someone came near her?”
“I’d rip their heads off,” I growled, which in return made my wolf stare at me.
Clair
“Okay, point taken.”
“Kael, tell your Alpha to leave and don’t go near Aiden. I’ll try to get them a car; nobody can go with them,” Ethan instructed.
I nodded and did as he asked.
I find Derek leaning against the side of the burned tree. At least, he wasn’t naked, but who knows where he found that shirt and those shorts.
His shoulders hunched in a way I’ve never seen before. Up close, his face looks smaller-like the fight wore him down instead of sharpening him. He’s blood-smeared, too, but his hands are steady as he uses a piece of cloth to clean his fingers.
“Derek,” I greet to let my presence be known.
“Before you tell me anything, Kratos already did,” He explained.
“What are you going to do?” I ask before I can stop myself.
I’m sure that is the question he won’t want to answer. Besides, what can he do? Declare war
on Shadow Pack?
Court Irina some more?
He inhales like he’s tasting ash. Then he says, plain and quiet, “Kael… loving someone also means knowing when to let them go.”
I stare at him.
Ever since I met Derek, I have admired one thing about him. He is not like other Alphas. He doesn’t let his pride get in the middle of his judgment.
“If Aiden had f****d it up,” Derek adds, and now the steel is back-tenser, colder-“I would have used that chance. You know I would. I’d have taken every scrap of a reason and-” He swallows. “I wouldn’t hesitate.”
He looks at me then, like he’s measuring how much of this I can carry. “But it doesn’t look like he f****d it up, Kael. From what Kratos said… Irina accepted him. He acted like a d**k, but

realized his mistakes before she rejected him. Either way, I won’t stand in the middle of their happiness.”
I sighed heavily. Derek is not old, but he should have found his mate by now. If he hasn’t, then perhaps she died. The fact that your Beta finds his mate before his Alpha is seen as a
weakness.
“Are you serious?” I ask.
He nods once. “I’m serious. I won’t make Irina choose between what she wants and what I
want. I’m not going to force anything. That’s not love, Kael. That’s possession. If she’s happy with Aiden, then I’ll bear that. But I’m not blind.” His jaw tightens. “If Aiden ever hurts her-if he endangers her or plays with her like she’s a prize-then I will act. He knows I will.”
Derek pushes off the tree and straightens, filling the air with that calm command he always has. “Let’s see how many rogues are still alive to face trial, the other bodies… we should find if they have families, if they do, return them.”
“You still want to give them a proper burial?” I asked, astonished that he could even consider that option.
He walked to stand by my side and clasped my shoulder. “Don’t forget where we came from, Kael. Being a rogue and even fighting for the enemy doesn’t make you a bad person. They may not have had another chance, or perhaps they thought they were on the right side. Either way, they deserve a chance.”
I sighed and dropped my gaze. I sometimes forget how mature Derek is.
“Don’t go near Aiden,” I warned. “His wolf is on the surface; if someone looks at Irina wrong, he might lose it.”
He nodded. “I know. I would do the same.”
Of course, we didn’t see Irina and Aiden after. I followed Derek’s orders and then returned to
Shadow Pack.
I had a mate waiting for me, even if she refused to acknowledge it.
“She is hot-headed,” Ronnie pointed out.
I nodded.
“Stubborn.”

I nodded again.
“Feisty, beautiful, that gorgeous body… f**k!”
I agreed with everything my wolf had to say. My Debbie was a walking temptation and a headache wrapped in one.
My Debbie was trouble. The good kind. The kind that makes you want to argue just so you can make up afterward.
When I finally crossed the border of Shadow Pack’s territory, the adrenaline that had carried me through the night began to ebb. Every bruise screamed for attention, every muscle burned, but I didn’t stop until I reached the cabins.
