Chapter 73: We Shower First
Irina’s POV
Aiden didn’t let me talk to anyone as he carried me from the battle grounds into the car. He then sat in the driver’s seat and drove like a man possessed.
The world outside blurred into streaks of black and gray. We didn’t exactly leave in the morning, so I expected to arrive at Shadow Pack by night, but because of how fast he drove,
we reached it before the sun set.
I could feel his aura; it wasn’t suffocating to me, but to others…
“Aiden?” I called softly, to which he hummed. “You know I’m alright…”
He hummed again.
Geez…
“He is not exactly in control,” Theia explained. “His wolf is the one controlling everything.”
“I know,” I replied. “But I have no idea how to make him give Aiden back control. And why is he still angry at me?”
“Try kissing his cheek,” She suggested. “And he is not angry at you. Just at the situation. We disappeared, and he couldn’t do anything.”
I sighed. Theia is right, I should give Arlo some time to process everything.
He didn’t say a single word. Not one.
His jaw was clenched, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. The veins on his forearms
stood out.
I waited until we arrived, and some pack members approached the vehicle, but the moment he stepped out, they stopped.
I’m sure his aura is more than enough warning for them not to try to approach him. Some remained, rotted in their spots, curious about who their Alpha had brought home.
Too bad they won’t get to see me, because Aiden opened the door, covered me with a coat he found who knows where, and made sure my body and face were hidden.
“Aiden, I can walk,” I whispered.
“No,” he growled.

“Perhaps you should enjoy the princess treatment,” Theia suggested.

I sighed softly and gave up fighting him. I could feel how badly he was shaking, though he was trying to hide it. His heartbeat was a wild rhythm against my side-steady, powerful, but desperate.
Inside, the house was quiet. Too quiet.
I expected Debbie to come running and ask us about her mate, but again, I think his aura is letting everyone know to stay back, and even if Debbie is fearless, she is not stupid.
He carried me straight upstairs, straight to his room. The door slammed behind us as he
kicked it.
I opened my mouth again, but the moment I met his eyes, the words died in my throat.
Did I miss something?
“Yep, we both did.”
I thought Aiden was hurt, angry, or who knows, but it turns out…
He is f*****g turned on.
“He looks like he is ready to devour us,” Theia purred, ready for what would come next.
I, on the other hand, could only gulp.
His pupils were blown wide, the gray nearly swallowed by black. His chest rose and fell in sharp, uneven breaths, and every inch of his body radiated a heat that made me think he was
in heat.
Will I be able to walk after this?
“Yeah, most likely. You do have the enigma power running through your veins,” She pointed out.
“It’s not like I can go and touch some grass after this,” I countered.
“You said you wanted to give him a chance…”
“And I do, I’m just worried about how I’m going to move around tomorrow.”
My wolf stared at me.
Okay… she is not going to budge.

I stared at Aiden once more, even though his whole body screamed desire, he didn’t make a single move.
“Aiden?” I called softly, my hand lifting to run it through his hair, but the moment I touched his cheek, he leaned against my hand, and that’s when I noticed…
“Aiden, holy f**k, you are burning up!”
I should get the doctor. Alphas don’t get sick, so if he is like this, then it means he needs rest and probably a checkup. I tried to get down, but he refused.
“Aiden, you are sick. I need to get the doctor,” I argued, my voice soft, but all he did was shake
his head.
“I’m not sick,” He replied.
His voice was gravelly, rough, and strained, like it cost him effort just to form the words.
I blinked at him. “What do you mean you’re not-
Before I could finish, Theia gasped. Loudly. Dramatically.
“Oh. My. Goddess.”
“What?” I hissed inwardly.
There was a pause. Then: “This is crazy.”
“Theia-”
“He’s not sick, Irina,” she said, half in disbelief, half in amused horror. “He’s in rut.”
I froze. “I’m sorry-he’s what?”
“In rut!” she repeated, like I was the slow one here. “You know, the Alpha version of being in heat. Elevated hormones, possessive instincts, loss of rational control, the need to-”
“Okay, okay! I get it!” I hissed back, my face heating instantly.
Never, ever, in my life, have I heard of an Alpha going into what Theia mentioned. Women go into heat once they meet their mates, and even in some areas, they do even without meeting them, but rut?
That was a different and foreign concept. I should ask Theia about it later.
She snorted. “Do you, though? Because judging by how you’re still standing here instead of locking the door and bracing yourself, I don’t think you fully comprehend what that means.”

I swallowed hard and dared another look at Aiden. His eyes had gone completely dark now – not just the irises, everything. “You said it’s like a heat, male version.”
She tilted her head. “You’ll see.”
Now I’m scared. Okay, deep breaths. I can do this.
If it’s like a heat, then Aiden must be in pain. I’m astonished that he was able to hold back so much.
“Aiden, put me down,” I said, trying to make my voice as soft as possible.
I have to remember that this Aiden is mostly controlled by his instinct; if I’m too harsh, he might snap.
A low, guttural sound rumbled in his chest, a protest that was more animal than man. But after a tense moment, his arms reluctantly loosened, and my feet touched the floor. He didn’t let me go far, his hands moving to my hips, anchoring me to the spot before him. The heat coming off him was intense, like standing next to a furnace.
“Rut?” I whispered.
He gave a sharp, jerky nod, his jaw so tight I thought it might crack. His eyes were wild, desperate, but beneath the primal hunger, I saw the man fighting for control. He didn’t want to hurt me.
“Arlo… he says… because you are… an enigma…” He shook his head, unable to finish. “It triggered it.”
Theia was unhelpfully silent now, leaving me to navigate this terrifying, uncharted territory alone.
