I got an urgent call from the family servant at noon. Louisa had suddenly fainted that morning and was now on her way to the hospital. Without a second thought, I jumped into my car and headed straight there.
Upon my arrival at the hospital, a heavy atmosphere hung in the air outside the ward. Grace and Anna were already there, and even Nathan had been brought along by the servant.
“What’s going on?” I snapped.
From the servant’s nervous stammering, I managed to piece together the story. Louisa had taken a phone call that morning and then, right in her room, she’d gone ballistic, shouting, “You goddamned bastard!” It was obvious the anger had taken a toll on her heart. A chill sense of dread ran down my spine.
The doctor emerged from the ward with news. Louisa had made it through the critical period, but he warned, “Her heart’s not in good shape, and her blood pressure’s high. She can’t afford to get this worked. up again. You need to keep an eye on her.”
As soon as the doctor was out of sight, Grace pounced on the servant, demanding, “Did someone blabber something stupid to Louisa?” She was clearly worried that the secret of Aaliyah’s short stay at my place might have leaked. I’d made it crystal-clear to everyone to keep their mouths shut.
The servant shook her head vigorously. Just then, Nathan wriggled free from the servant’s grasp and ran over to me, his voice thick with sobs. “Daddy! Why’d you send Ms. Cooper away? I want her back! I miss Mommy…”
Before he could finish, I grabbed his shoulder tightly. “Pipe down!” I hissed. There was no way I’d let him add fuel to the fire and upset Grandma.
Grace wasn’t having any of it. She roughly grabbed Nathan’s wrist, making him yelp in pain. “You little brat, watch your mouth! If your great-grandma hears you, I’ll tear you apart!” She’d never been fond of this “adopted” kid.
Nathan burst into louder cries. I quickly stepped in front of him. “Mom, don’t be so hard on a kid.”
Just then, the nurse popped out and told us we could go in, but with a reminder not to rile up Louisa. Grace and I exchanged a knowing look, left Anna and Nathan outside, and stepped into the ward.
Inside, Louisa was sitting up in bed. Her face was as pale as a sheet, but there was still an air of authority about her. Her silent, high-ranking Beta werewolf bodyguard and assistant stood by her side.
“Louisa… What on earth got you so mad?” Grace asked tentatively.
Louisa shot us a cold look and nodded at her assistant, who bowed and left the room. Then, with a flick of her hand, a thick envelope stuffed with photos came flying my way. “Take a gander at this,” she said, her voice weak but menacing.
I caught the envelope, my gut tightening. When I opened it, there were pictures of me and Aaliyah. We

were getting into the car and walking hand-in-hand toward the clinic, all taken at night. And the date on the photos? It was last night!
Grace snatched the photos out of my hand. The moment she saw Aaliyah’s face, she went off the deep end. “That slut again!” Before Louisa could even react, she landed a stinging slap on my face. “Where is she? If you won’t quit, I’ll make sure she does!” she snapped.
I took the slap without a word. When she tried to storm out, I grabbed her arm. “Mom, it’s my screw-up. Come after me.”
“Come after you?” Louisa let out a scornful laugh. Her voice carried the weight of a werewolf elder’s authority. “So, you’re thinking of going against your grandfather’s will, giving up everything in Thorn Pack, breaking the bond with Natalie, and running off with that Omega, huh?”
Forcing myself to stay calm, I quickly came up with an explanation. “Grandma, hear me out. Aaliyah and I… Well, it’s just work-related. Natalie’s been away from the company lately, and there was no one to handle the project. Aaliyah had the right connections and gave us a hand. Dad knows about this, too. We met last night for work. She was sick, so I drove her to the clinic.”
My eyes darted to Grace. Grandma still held a chunk of the family’s assets; I had to ease her nerves first. Grace got the hint right away. She tamped down her anger and backed me up. “Yeah, I know about it! I’ve chewed Landon out. He and Natalie are in a good relationship. There’s no way he’d mess around with Aaliyah. It’s all for the company.”
“So, Benjamin knows about this, too?” Louisa took a deep breath, her face looking even worse.
