As soon as I finished speaking, I noticed Natalie had spaced out again. A trace of blood even seeped from the corner of her lips.

A heavy feeling washed over me. I even regretted being so blunt. I didn’t know Natalie well. I always thought she was like Alexander-cold on the outside, warm inside, but ultimately more rational than emotional. She wouldn’t get too invested in feelings. Especially since she handled her breakup so decisively, I didn’t think she’d be impulsive or lose her head over a man.

I had it all planned out-what to say to make Natalie leave the Scott Group at this critical moment. Penelope offered me Liam’s safety for this small favor. I had no reason to refuse. Besides, Penelope just wanted me to pass on the news, to make Natalie leave the Scott Group temporarily.

Even if I didn’t help, if something happened to Silver-Maned Pack, Penelope had many ways to let Natalie know. But Penelope’s move was clearly meant to drag me into this.

Later, when Natalie found out I helped Penelope, there would be no trust left between us. Even if I wanted to treat her like a niece, she’d never be close to me again.

I knew what Penelope was doing, but I agreed anyway. I was getting old. I really didn’t want to get caught up in the fight between Penelope and Natalie. Besides, Penelope was a difficult woman to deal with. Liam was my everything now. I just wanted to protect myself.

As for Natalie, if she was already marrying Leonardo and still couldn’t outmaneuver Penelope, that was her fate.

Even though I’d convinced myself of this, seeing Natalie like this still made me uncomfortable. I handed her a tissue and said, “Natalie, don’t panic. I’m sure he’ll be fine. But you… You need to stay calm. Your health is important.”

Natalie’s POV:

Hearing Matthew’s words, a thought suddenly occurred to me. The haze in my eyes cleared for

a moment.

I stated, “The Scott Group is at a critical point. I’ll have people at the company keep an eye on things. But I remember you’re invested in this project, too. I need your help to make sure nothing goes wrong.”

I was fully aware of how irresponsible it was to leave now. This new drug launch was crucial.

Everything was meticulously prepared, and major issues were unlikely. But the final inspections and approvals needed my personal review and signature. And here I was, running off. The only person I could trust right now was Matthew. He was part of the Scott family. His interests aligned with the Scott Group’s.

Matthew’s POV:

“I’ll take care of it,” I said, my throat tight. My voice sounded guilty.

But Natalie, in her current state, didn’t notice the slight change in my expression. She just nodded gratefully. “Thank you. I’ll delegate the signing authority to you. If anything happens…”

“Contact me immediately.” I finished for her, nodding. The car had arrived at the airport terminal.

Natalie seemed much calmer now. But when she went to unbuckle her seatbelt, I saw her hands shaking uncontrollably. After a moment, she clenched her fist and gave me a smile that was worse than crying. “I have to go.”

As she spoke, I thought I saw a tear slip from the corner of her eye.

She was clearly panicking inside, but still forcing herself to hold it together. A man she hadn’t known for long had her this worried?

I couldn’t help but think of Liam. Why were the children of our Moon-Shadowed Pack all such hopeless romantics?

“Nat…” I started to say something more, but Natalie didn’t give me the chance. She was already getting out of the car.

Natalie’s assistant was waiting at the entrance. The two of them walked away quickly and soon disappeared from sight.

On the drive back, my frown never lifted.

I had plenty of reasons to justify my actions. I didn’t even know exactly what Penelope was planning. I wasn’t really an accomplice. But remembering the trust in Natalie’s eyes as she left, it left a heavy, uncomfortable feeling in

my

chest.

I had just stepped into my house, planning to contact Penelope, when her call came through.

I waved for the servants to leave and answered the phone in the hallway.

“Natalie has left. She went in a hurry. She didn’t waste a moment after hearing the news,” I said,

my voice grim. “As for Liam…”

Penelope’s amused voice came through the receiver. “Don’t worry, Matthew. The Marshall family dared to target the Scott family. I won’t let that slide. A large batch of their cooperative supplies failed inspection. The losses are quite severe. The news should break tomorrow. If that’s not enough, I can make sure their daughter suffers a bit more…”

“Penelope,” I said, sensing something was off. “I don’t care about the Marshall family. I want Liam back first.”

“Matthew, I’ve already sent people to negotiate in Mervia. The Marshall family threatened us. They deserve what’s coming. Why should we show them any respect, right?” Penelope’s words made me freeze.

I felt like I’d been played. If Penelope could pressure the Marshall family like this, getting Liam out of Mervia would be simple. But she hadn’t done that. Instead, she attacked the Marshall family directly. This wasn’t helpful. Instead, this was stirring the pot!
