“Penelope, let’s be clear. What are you trying to do? Threaten me?” Annoyed, I raised

“Why so impatient, Matthew? Don’t worry. Liam will be back home safely within a week. It’s just…” Penelope’s voice grew even softer. “With the Scott Group’s drug launch coming up, I need one more small favor from you.”

“Don’t push your luck, Penelope. Alexander may be gone, but that doesn’t mean Moon- Shadowed Pack is defenseless.” Her words enraged me. I hung up the phone in a fit of anger.

I never imagined Penelope would dare to blackmail me like this. Back when she bonded with Alexander, she played the part of the virtuous, gentle lady from a good family perfectly. But I saw through her shrewdness from the start. She had family background, capability, and looks, yet she willingly played the subordinate role to Alexander and never had children. “Mr. Matthew Scott, is Liam really being held in Mervia?” A cool female voice spoke up from behind me.

I whirled around. Chloe was there.

“Chloe, you… What are you doing here?” I was shocked, staring at her in disbelief. She was in my house!

Chloe’s POV:

“I’m sorry, Mr. Matthew Scott. I came looking for Liam. He wasn’t here, so I waited for you without permission.” I had been there for a while. I was waiting in the sitting room, but no one attended to me for a long time, so I stepped into the hallway for some air.

I saw Matthew come home and immediately answer a phone call. The butler didn’t even have time to announce me before Matthew waved him away. I saw him on the phone and didn’t dare interrupt, so I stayed hidden in a corner.

“Were you eavesdropping on my call?” Matthew asked. He had never liked me much. His expression turned cold and severe.

“You know you’re not welcome here, Ms. Chloe Kelly. Please see yourself out.” I was furious. Being polite to Chloe was the height of my restraint. I turned to leave.

“You were just talking to Mrs. Penelope Scott, weren’t you? If I’m not mistaken, is she using Liam to pressure you into doing something?” Chloe laid out my secret plainly.

Anyone who got involved in the Scott family affairs wouldn’t end well. That was especially true for someone like Chloe, who could barely protect herself.

My body stiffened. I looked back at Chloe, my gaze turning cold, sharp, and menacing.

I said coldly, “Ms. Chloe Kelly, the things you shouldn’t have overheard, you should forget. That’s the best advice I can give you.”

Chloe’s POV:

“Mr. Matthew Scott, I know you have prejudices against me. It doesn’t matter how you see me. But please believe me, I really don’t want anything to happen to Liam. I came today because I want to help.” I summoned my courage to speak. My palms were actually tingling with nerves.

In my whole life, the only person I had ever truly trusted was Liam. Everyone else seemed like a bad person to me, especially people from big packs like Moon-Shadowed and Grayclaw.
