“I…” I wanted to explain, but the words died on my lips. I had never been toying with Liam.

“Mr. Matthew Scott, if Liam gets through this safely, I’ll stay far away from him. But right now, Liam’s situation is what matters. Getting angry at me won’t help. I came today to confirm what happened. If Liam is really being held in Mervia, I have a way to help him.” I had gathered bits of information, but I wasn’t sure if it was true. Overhearing Matthew’s call earlier gave me some confirmation.

“You have a way?” Matthew’s anger subsided a little, though he still didn’t believe me. “How?”

I nodded seriously. “You don’t need to worry about that. But I want you to promise me one thing.”

“What? You want to make a deal with me, too?” Matthew snorted, a look of expectation in his

eyes.

I gave a somewhat helpless smile. “I’m not making any demands. I just want you to give me three days. For Liam’s sake, please don’t let yourself be used. And don’t hurt Natalie.”

It was common knowledge in their circles that Penelope was targeting Natalie. I knew it, too. If Matthew was being blackmailed by Penelope, it had to involve Natalie.

We weren’t friends-I didn’t have friends. But I always remembered when people showed me kindness, and I never wanted to owe anyone. Besides, Natalie was Liam’s cousin. I knew Liam. He valued family harmony. He would never do something that hurt someone else’s interests for his own sake.

“What are you planning to do?” Seeing I wasn’t joking, Matthew’s expression grew serious.

“Mr. Matthew Scott, just give me three days. I’ll get Liam back.” I didn’t answer him directly. My eyes grew somber. I bowed slightly to Matthew, then turned and hurried away.

Natalie’s POV:

Early morning, the moment I got off the plane at the southwest border airport, I started calling and texting Aaron. He didn’t expect me to know. He had no choice but to tell me the truth.

“Mr. Sanchez hasn’t woken up yet, but he’s past the most critical period. Ms. Anderson, please don’t panic.” Aaron tried to calm me down and immediately sent me the location.

People from the Sanchez family were clearly there. Fiona had gone to rest due to exhaustion. Miranda answered the phone. Her voice sounded hoarse, like she’d been crying. She was both touched and worried that I had come so quickly, and she tried to comfort me.

After hanging up, I sat in the car and finally couldn’t hold back anymore. I buried my face in my hands.

My assistant saw my shaking shoulders and knew I was crying. She reached out to comfort me, but didn’t know what to say. Maybe not disturbing me was best right then.

I was frantic with worry.

We had left in a hurry, barely an hour after getting the news. I had no change of clothes and hadn’t slept on the private jet. My assistant found me a blanket. Otherwise, with the sudden temperature drop, I wouldn’t have held up.

I cried the whole way. I wanted to be calm when I saw Leonardo, but I couldn’t. The thought of almost losing him forever made the fear unbearable.

It was the same fear I felt as a child when my mother left me at the orphanage.

I didn’t ask for much-just a little light to move forward. Or to be left in complete darkness, so I could get used to it.

But fate always seemed to give me warmth and light, only to push me back into the abyss.

The hospital where Leonardo was located was near the Faeloria border. Aaron and Miranda came to pick me up personally. When I saw them, I pulled myself together and stopped crying.

Inside the hospital room, old monitoring equipment showed steady readings. The rhythmic mechanical sounds were unsettling. Leonardo was still on a ventilator, hooked up to IVs. He lay pale and unnaturally quiet in the hospital bed.

As I entered the room, my steps quickened. But the moment I saw him, my heart nearly stopped. The tears I had just managed to hold back broke free again, falling in large drops.

I covered my mouth, clenching my jaw to keep myself from looking so fragile.

It had only been a week, but Leonardo looked so much thinner. His usually tall, imposing frame looked small and fragile in the narrow hospital bed.

The medical facilities here at the border were limited. But Leonardo’s injuries were severe, with internal bleeding in multiple places. He needed immediate treatment. This was the best hospital and equipment available locally. He had almost not made it.

The moment the accident happened, Leonardo probably knew he might not survive. That was why he told Aaron not to tell me right away.

Aaron said apologetically, “Ms. Anderson, please don’t be angry with Mr. Sanchez. He just didn’t want you to worry.”

Miranda’s POV:

“Natalie, I know him. He hates people seeing him in a weak state. He was afraid if he…” I couldn’t help choking up. Seeing Leonardo like this broke my heart.

Even though Leonardo was born into the Sanchez family, he never had an easy life. He always endured hardship. But he was incredibly strong, never showing weakness. Even when he was sick, he bore it alone. Not just me, even Fiona had never seen Leonardo this badly injured before.
