The extent of his trauma is severe, particularly the damage to his spine and nerves. There will likely be some lasting effects,” the doctor explained. “The most critical issue is the blood supply to his brain. If he doesn’t regain consciousness in the next couple of days, I’m afraid there’s little more we can do here. You should arrange for a transfer as soon as possible.”
His words were another heavy blow to everyone.
Moving Leonardo in his current state was risky, but the medical facilities here were limited. Fiona had already called in a top-tier medical team, but it hadn’t arrived yet. Even then, the local equipment would still be a constraint.
Every day Leonardo remained unconscious, the danger grew.
Listening to the others talk, I felt a chill settle in my clenched fists.
Fiona wanted to stay overnight with me in the hospital room. I argued with her for a long time before I finally insisted that someone take her home to rest.
After seeing Fiona off, I returned to the room and heard Miranda on the phone in a corner. She was probably filling Ryan in, her voice choking up. Whatever was said on the other end clearly upset her. After a moment of silence, she snapped, “He’s your own son.” Then she hung
I waited a bit before entering.
Miranda turned her head, composing herself, then offered me a gentle smile. “I’m counting on you to watch over Leonardo tonight. Call us for anything. If it gets to be too much for you, go back and rest. There are plenty of people here.”
“Okay.” I nodded. Then I stepped forward and hugged her. “Thank you, Miranda.”
She seemed surprised at first, but then understood. I was thanking her for Leonardo. Even though he lost his mother young, he had a stepmother like Miranda who cared for him as her
own.
“There’s nothing to thank me for. We’re family, Natalie.” Miranda glanced at Leonardo, looking like she had more to say, but stopped herself.

Earlier, on the phone with Ryan, I explained Leonardo’s condition. He was worried, sure, but what concerned him more was whether Leonardo would still be capable of leading Silver- Maned Pack if he recovered. Ryan only had this one son. Otherwise, he would have to start making other plans.
Natalie seemed to guess what I was about to say. Before I could continue, she said softly, “No matter what happens to Leonardo, I’ll be by his side.”
“But you’re still young. If Leonardo really doesn’t wake up…” My eyes suddenly grew hot. I was moved that Natalie would say such a thing, and relieved for Leonardo. But devotion would fade with prolonged illness, and Natalie and Leonardo were still newlyweds. They hadn’t even had their bonding ceremony yet.
“Miranda, Leonardo will wake up,” Natalie smiled, cutting me off.
I nodded. “You’re right.”
Natalie’s POV:
Late at night, a cool draft from the window startled me awake. My eyes flew open, and I instinctively reached for Leonardo’s hand.
He lay still, his sharp features looking unusually soft in the dim light.
“Leonardo, you have to pull through. I’m not as strong as you think I am. If…” Miranda’s words echoed in my mind. I didn’t want to consider the worst outcome, but I had to prepare myself.
“If you don’t wake up, I’ll be sad for a very, very long time. Leonardo, if you can’t walk this path with me either, then I’ll be all alone in this world for the rest of my life,” I whispered the words near his ear.
I had meant to sound firm, as if that could provoke a response from him. But in the end, I couldn’t bear it, and my words came out as a pleading murmur.
After speaking, I got up to close the window.
The moon hung high, its clear, bright silver light washing over my face. I couldn’t help but bring my hands together in a prayer.
I said, “Moon Goddess, if you can keep Leonardo safe and help him wake up soon, I’m willing to give up five years of my life. No, even ten years would be fine.”
My low murmur seemed to stir the person on the bed.
Leonardo’s slender hand, also brushed by the moonlight’s glow, twitched almost

The next day at noon, in the Mervia embassy, my aides and I were led to a private reception room to wait. I wanted to ask more questions, but the escorts offered no response.
I knew that my detention, interrogation, and even the filing of several unfounded commercial charges to prevent me from leaving the country were all part of an elaborate trap.
The Marshall family had years of entwined interests with several old werewolf families in Mervia, while Moon-Shadowed Pack had recently deepened its ties with the domestic werewolf economic circle. This could be due to Mervia’s diplomatic strategies or targeted revenge by the Marshall family.
But I wasn’t worried. I knew I hadn’t broken any rules. Even if I had to stay and fight this in court, it was just a matter of time. The worst-case scenario was a temporary delay in returning home. The impact on my father and Moon-Shadowed Pack was manageable. To defend my pack’s interests, I didn’t mind waiting it out here. Patience was a trait I had always had.
The only thing that unsettled me was being unable to contact my father. I worried he might make rash decisions out of concern for me. That was why I kept pushing for the right to call home.
But this morning, things changed abruptly. Embassy staff suddenly notified me that I was being released on bail. The paperwork was processed with suspicious speed. As I was led to the front hall, my mind was filled with doubts.
