Chapter 255 An Accident?
Natalie’s POV:
Hearing that, my ears burned. I almost wanted to roll over and crawl into a hole and hide.

How embarrassing! He actually heard me saying something that sappy. How on earth did it happen that he regained consciousness at precisely that moment?
“That wasn’t real. You misheard. It was a dream,” I said, opting for denial.
“I was touched,” Leonardo said, his breathing heavy, his voice low. “But I don’t want ten years of your life. Not a single day.
“I just want you by my side. Every day, until the day I die.”
“Don’t talk about dying. Hush! That’s bad luck! Don’t say it!” I couldn’t listen anymore and cut him off sharply. As a hybrid werewolf, I had a werewolf’s bluntness but also kept some human customs and superstitions.
Leonardo grunted in response, a trace of a smile in his voice. “Mm. I don’t believe in gods or ghosts.”
Ο
“You’ve said so. I know.” I nodded quietly. He’d told me that when we watched horror movies together.
“But if you were to make a wish to the Moon Goddess,” Leonardo continued, his voice dropping to a murmur, “I would trade my own life for your safety and health.”
“Leonardo! Stop talking like that!” My tone grew sharper. He had just come back from the brink of death. I was feeling sensitive and superstitious about such topics right now.
“Mm… Weren’t you talking nonsense first?” Leonardo’s voice was already growing slurred. The medication was taking full effect.
“I only said that because I was desperate…” I realized I’d been tricked into admitting it and quickly bit my lip. Then I added in a low voice, “I already said it wasn’t me.”
But after I spoke, I noticed that he had gone quiet. His heartbeat was steady, his breathing light. He seemed to have fallen into a deep sleep.
I waited a while to make sure he was asleep, then pulled the blanket up for him. I settled down beside him to rest, too, but I wasn’t that sleepy. I ended up just watching him, counting his eyelashes.
Leonardo’s eyelashes were so thick, curly, and really beautiful.
Penelope’s POV:
Meanwhile, in Maritime City, I received the news that Leonardo had woken up.
Impossible! The people I hired specialized in dirty dealings between werewolves. They were thorough and never missed a job. How could they have just let Leonardo wake up?

“What’s going on? Are you guys just useless? I wanted this handled once and for all, and you swore it’d be done!” I demanded sharply.
The person on the other end sounded impatient. “The timing was too tight. There wasn’t a chance to act.”
“What?” I was stunned. “You haven’t made a move yet?”
Could Leonardo’s accident really have been just that—an accident?
“I’ll handle it. But I’m warning you, I don’t take orders from you,” the man on the line said coldly. Then he hung up.
I took a deep breath, fury burning in my chest. As the Luna of Moon-Shadowed Pack, I was used to giving orders and being obeyed.
The other party was part of a notoriously ruthless international werewolf syndicate. I couldn’t control them completely, but they couldn’t play me for a fool either!
I sent the payment and provided the intelligence-Leonardo’s itinerary, security details, and weakness analysis. And now they were letting him come back unscathed?
In a rage, I swept several crystal ornaments off the desk. The sound of shattering glass echoed in the room. Just as I was about to lose control, my phone vibrated again. An encrypted message from overseas came through.
For the sake of the money, they offered an explanation.
Leonardo had an unexpected accident at the border. Their people couldn’t get close afterward because the Sanchez family reinforcements arrived. The security team was extremely tight, all Silver-Maned Pack elite warriors. They could only wait for the next opportunity.

However, the message ended with an assurance. Since they’d taken the job, and the target was Ryan’s son- the only bloodline of the former Silver-Maned Pack Alpha-they would “see it through.” They would watch for timing after Leonardo returned home.
But reading this only made me feel worse.
I’d specifically chosen to have it done overseas to avoid causing trouble in Maritime City.
“Mother.” Suddenly, Samuel’s voice came from the doorway. He had pushed the door open without warning, startling me.
“Who told you to come in? Why didn’t you knock?” I snapped. I was already in a foul mood, and his unannounced entry angered me further.
“I knocked for a while. I heard a lot of noise inside and thought something had happened to you.” Samuel’s gaze swept over the mess on the floor, then landed on my phone on the desk.
“Just say what you came for,” I said irritably, sinking into my chair and taking a deep breath to calm myself.

“Liam is back in the country,” Samuel stated calmly.
My eyes, which I had just closed, flew open.
“What did you say?” I was shocked.

I knew the Marshall family couldn’t hold Liam for long. With their limited influence, making things difficult for him was about all they could manage. Even if I didn’t pull strings, as long as Matthew was willing to make some business concessions, Liam would be free eventually.
But I hadn’t expected it to be this soon.
