I’d thought Chloe might at least thank me, but she just looked annoyed-like this was just one more thing to check off her list.
“So I made things worse back there? Put you in an awkward spot?” I felt a pang of disappointment. I had to work up the nerve to do that. Now there would probably be rumors again about me being ruled by my heart.
“That’s not what I meant. It’s just…” Chloe thought for a moment but didn’t finish.
“Just what?” I really wanted to hear it.
“You did stick your nose in where it didn’t belong. Don’t do it again,” she said.
I didn’t reply. I just tightened my grip on the warm coffee cup, turned, and walked away.
Chloe’s POV:
As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew I’d put my foot in it. Sure enough, I saw Liam’s face visibly darken. I wanted to say something else, but I didn’t know how to fix it.
Liam didn’t say anything more. He just took the coffee and left. His assistants glanced at me, and even they looked a bit disappointed.
When I got back to the department, the colleagues who had been peeking from the doorway instantly scattered. I pressed my fingers to my throbbing temples.
Just then, a male colleague sidled over with a coffee cup, a teasing look on his face. “Chloe, you’re not into Mr. Liam Scott’s type, are you? So what kind of guy do you like?”
I gave him a cold look, noticed the coffee in his hand was one I bought, and reached out to take it back. “Definitely not your type,” I said. I had only treated the women in the department. The men weren’t included.
Liam’s POV:
I felt irritated, though I couldn’t exactly say why. Seeing her carrying that heavy stuff, stumbling in the crowd, some inexplicable impulse had made me follow her and say all those stupid things. In the end, I just made a fool of myself and embarrassed her.
I had come to the Scott Group headquarters to see Natalie, We had an appointment for the afternoon, but I had some free time at noon, so I came early. Natalie wasn’t in her office at lunchtime, so I waited there. Bored, I opened the coffee Chloe had given me and took a sip.
It was intensely bitter. The extreme taste instantly overwhelmed my senses, making me grimace. I’d always been sensitive to bitterness, whether in food or medicine. Chloe just gave me coffee without even asking my preference. It was black, no sugar or milk. Seriously, she had no thought at all.
Just as I was wrestling with this bitter assault, Natalie walked in, catching me with my “pain face” on.

“Liam, you okay?” Office gossip traveled fast. I’d already heard a tidbit on my way up. They were saying Liam had just professed his feelings to Chloe at her department door, trying to win her back, but he was brutally rejected.
In the elevator, I’d been thinking to myself. Liam told me he and Chloe were just friends now, no more
romance.
Could he really not help himself?
And doing it at the office? That was pretty embarrassing, wasn’t it?
“No. It’s too bitter.” Liam set the coffee down, looking sheepish.

“I understand how you feel. But you… You shouldn’t force yourself.” I couldn’t really help with other people’s relationship problems. All I could do was pat Liam’s shoulder sympathetically.

I thought Natalie was talking about the coffee. “But I can’t just throw it away, can I? That’s wasteful.” I had glanced at the sleeve earlier. It wasn’t cheap. Chloe bought so many. Did her allowance even cover it?
I knew the Kelly family was stingy with her. They gave her a very small allowance each month. The clothes she wore to events were always hand-me-downs from Eleanor. She couldn’t afford nice things on her own.
When I used to buy her gifts, if they were too expensive, she wouldn’t accept them. Giving her money would make her angry.
But after all these years, Chloe was still just as stubborn-hadn’t changed a bit.
Ever since,I saw her still working as a server at that Grayclaw Pack entertainment club, I knew she didn’t have much savings.
“But if you find it bitter and don’t throw it away, you’re just torturing yourself,” Natalie said with a sigh, then turned to organize some files.
“I’m still not used to it, but it’s not unbearable,” I said, staring at the cup. Almost against my will, I picked it up again and took a big gulp. This time, the bitterness seemed less sharp, transforming into a deep, pervasive flavor.
“When it’s extremely bitter, you almost stop feeling it,” I admitted, frowning.
Natalie laughed, “I have to admire your persistence. Want me to help you?”
“How?” I was confused. Was Natalie going to help me finish this coffee? That seemed odd. I’d already drunk from it. Or did she have sugar in her office?
Natalie took out her phone, opened her chat with Chloe, held down the voice message button, and said in a light, amused tone, “Chloe, Liam says he isn’t giving up on you, no matter what. Why not give him a
chance?”
I was in the middle of swallowing that second gulp when I heard this. I choked, coughing violently. My fingers clenched the paper cup, nearly spilling the rest all over myself.

“Na-Natalie!” I sputtered between coughs, my face burning red from embarrassment. So that was what Natalie had been talking about earlier!
Natalie quickly handed me a tissue. “Drink slowly-take it easy.”
