Chapter 310 He Should Think Twice

Natalie’s POV:

“Lily,” I called out.

Lily looked up at the sound of her name. Seeing that it was me, she immediately stood. “Natalie!”

“Busy?” I glanced at the files piled on her desk. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Samuel’s hand resting casually on the edge of her desk, his tall frame leaning back lazily.

Before Lily could answer, Samuel said first, drawing out his words, “Natalie, aren’t you piling too much work on Lily? I can’t even get her to spare time for a meal with me.”

I gave him a cold look. “Samuel, don’t you remember you were suspended recently? Want another warning for bothering female staff?”

“Bothering?” he chuckled—a lazy, cat-like sound. “That’s a heavy accusation.” He straightened up leisurely, his gaze returning to Lily with a hint of predatory interest. “Find me when you’re free next time.” With that, he deliberately brushed past my shoulder as he walked away.

Strangely, this man, who usually wore strong cologne and flashy clothes, carried almost no scent today. He was unusually plain.

Once he was gone, I motioned for Lily to follow me into the elevator.

As soon as the doors closed, I asked her directly, “Do you like Samuel?”

“No,” Lily said, frowning. “It’s just… our relationship has thawed a bit recently.”

Her expression didn’t seem fake, which only made me more concerned. “I warned you, Samuel is bad news, Why are you still associating with him?”

Lily stayed silent.

“He’s interested in you. I can tell,” I said, my tone urgent. “Do you know what happens to girls he sets his sights on? It’s never good.”

“I know.” Lily’s voice turned cold.

I insisted, “Lily…”

“Natalie,” she interrupted me for the first time, her gaze resolute but with a coldness I’d never seen before flickering in her eyes. “Stop worrying about me. Focus on yourself. Even if Samuel is interested, who wins and who loses in the end isn’t decided yet.”

The girl who was always gentle seemed like a different person. Her tone held a kind of desperate determination.

“Lily, what’s really going on? Is there something else between you and Samuel that I don’t know about?” I took her hand and found her palm was ice cold.

Lily looked down. The elevator doors opened to the parking garage.

She said, “Natalie, I’m sorry. This is my business. I know some of my thoughts are extreme, even stupid… But I want to do this anyway.”

“Do you really think someone like Samuel is capable of falling for someone?” My voice tightened.

I had a vague sense of what Lily was planning, and the more I thought about it, the more it scared me.

Whether Lily felt a desire to conquer Samuel or had some other motive… this wasn’t good.

Lily suddenly smiled, a very faint smile. “Everyone has a weakness.” She gave me a light hug, her palm against my back. “Even you, Natalie. You’ve been hurt by love, but you still have weaknesses.”

“But Samuel isn’t like me. He isn’t like us,” I said.

“He’s different,” Lily agreed, letting go. Her eyes were unreadable. “But as long as he’s still capable of feeling… who can predict matters of the heart?”

On the drive home, I kept thinking about Lily’s words. She was dead set on getting entangled with Samuel. After much hesitation, I finally dialed Samuel’s number.

“Natalie?” he answered quickly, his tone teasing. “To what do I owe the honor? You’re actually calling me?”

“I’m warning you, stay away from Lily,” I said, my voice hard. “She’s under my protection. If you hurt her, I will make you pay.”

Samuel dropped the pretense, letting out a laugh. “Mutual attraction between a man and a woman is none of your business. You’re really going to meddle in this?”

I said coldly, “Yes, I am. Lily is not someone you can toy with. And she is absolutely not right for you.”

“Whether we’re right for each other is for us to figure out,” he stated.

“Go ahead and try,” I said, lowering my voice. “And I can make sure you’re thrown out of the pack permanently.”

I hung up immediately. Samuel was a man who prioritized his own interests. No matter how interested he was in Lily, he should think twice after a warning like that.

Samuel’s POV:

After hanging up Natalie’s call, I leaned against the floor-to-ceiling window in my office and couldn’t help but chuckle softly. How interesting!

Lily, that seemingly docile, timid Beta, could make Natalie this nervous. I had to admit, I’d grown more and more interested in Lily lately. I found myself wanting to tease her every day.

It wasn’t because she was particularly special. It was her contradictory reactions that were fascinating.

Her eyes clearly showed resistance, but her body would tense slightly when I got close. Her mouth would say, “Please be proper,” but the tips of her ears would turn pink.

She was like a little animal, scared but trying hard to act calm. It made me want to tease her, to see how long she could hold out.

I’d even gotten into the habit of texting her “Goodnight” every evening, then looking forward to her brief, polite reply.

It was not that I planned on anything serious with her.

But seeing how agitated Natalie was, had Lily actually fallen for me? Why else would Natalie talk to Lily and then immediately call to threaten me in such a rage?

If she wanted to keep us apart, all she had to do was make Lily reject me, right?

Thinking about that made me feel genuinely pleased. A smile crept onto my lips.
