I didn’t refuse. Samuel’s phone lit up several times on the way, but he didn’t even glance at it, let alone answer.
I couldn’t hold back. “Mr. Scott, if you’re busy, you can just drop me off nearby.”
“It’s fine. We’re almost there,” Samuel said, looking ahead. The neon lights streaming past the window cast his profile in a rare, cold light, free of his usual slickness.
But I had no mind to appreciate his looks. My thoughts were entirely on how to pry some useful information out of him to tell Natalie. Natalie wasn’t at the company right now. These underhanded moves by her enemies couldn’t be ignored.
“Mr. Scott, do you have a business dinner?” Seeing that Samuel showed no intention of volunteering information, I couldn’t help but ask first.
Sure enough, Samuel glanced at me sideways. “Yes,” he answered briefly.
“Important guests?” I gestured to his suit. He’d specifically changed into a new suit, and his cologne was so strong it almost overwhelmed every other scent. I’d studied this. Whenever Samuel met important clients or had crucial pack meetings, the cologne was especially heavy.
“You could say so,” Samuel said, taking a light breath. A faint smile appeared in his eyes as he looked at me.
He was being unusually tight-lipped today. Normally, if I asked a couple of questions, he’d find
a way to tease me.
I clenched my hands and fell silent, too. The car stopped at a traffic light. Samuel rested his elbow on the window frame. He glanced outside. But from the blurred reflection in the side window, I thought I saw him look at me.
Soon, the light turned green. One more intersection, and we’d be near my place. But at that moment, Samuel suddenly swung the steering wheel!
I was taken aback. “Mr. Scott, this isn’t the right way.”
“Just remembered I forgot something. Need to pick it up,” Samuel still said calmly, but his speed noticeably increased. This wasn’t the way home, nor back to the office.
A sense of unease rose in me. I immediately sat up straight. “Then just drop me off here. I can get back myself.”

“Nope. I promised to see you home,” Samuel snorted, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Don’t worry. It’ll be quick.”
“Mr. Scott! Samuel!” I said, trying a serious tone to make him stop.
But Samuel ignored me. He stepped on the gas, weaving swiftly through the traffic. Instinctively, I reached for the door handle, but it was locked. “Samuel, what are you doing?”
“Keep me company for a bit. I’ll take you home later.” He paid no mind to my alarmed look or my struggles. To him, they were probably amusing, like watching a small animal thrashing in a
trap.
I took a deep breath. “Samuel, we agreed not to pull this stuff, didn’t we? Aren’t you afraid I’ll tell Natalie?” Given Natalie’s current standing in the Pack, he should have some concerns.
“Even if I didn’t pull this stuff, would you not tell Natalie?” His words shut me up.
I was stunned. “What do you mean?”
“You were eavesdropping outside my office, yet you had the nerve to act righteous? I treated you so well, yet you insisted on being Natalie’s spy. It truly broke my heart.” Samuel’s voice was utterly calm, tinged with amusement, all mockery.
Samuel’s POV:
I enjoyed teasing Lily, but that didn’t mean I was blind to her real intentions.
Originally, I was going to let it slide, considering the herbal tonic soup. But thinking it over, if things went south, I’d be the one facing the consequences.
Lily probed me without a shred of guilt. Well then, I’d stop pretending, too.
Her face paled. “I wasn’t eavesdropping. I came to bring you the soup…”
“What did you hear?” I cut her off, then continued before she could answer, “But it doesn’t matter. Until this deal is finalized, you’ll just stay with me. Don’t worry. I won’t do anything to
you.”
“Samuel, have you no shame? A true gentleman doesn’t take advantage. Are you exploiting my trust to calculate me?” Lily was frantic, but even as she spoke, she looked pitiful, utterly innocent.
