Hearing Samuel’s words, a wave of disgust washed over me. I immediately looked away.

“I can go buy them for you, but I’m a bit slow. You’d better take your time showering, so you don’t catch a chill.” After saying that, I hurried out of the bedroom with the bedding, my heart pounding wildly in my chest-not because of his body, but because the opportunity had arrived.
Samuel smiled slightly before he turned and headed into the bathroom. The door shut behind him, and the sound of running water soon followed.
I didn’t hesitate for a second. I went straight back into the bedroom and picked up Samuel’s phone. I knew exactly what I was doing-stealing personal information and work secrets from an Alpha, a core member of the Moon-Shadowed Pack. Under werewolf law and pack rules, this was a serious crime.
But I had no time to hesitate. Near my apartment was an unassuming phone repair store. The owner was a skilled guy with some hacking know-how who’d helped me with minor device issues before. I slipped out of my apartment like a thief, phone tucked away.
When the store owner saw the clearly expensive phone with its complex passcode lock, his eyes held a flicker of suspicion. I made up an excuse-said I’d found it and was trying to locate the owner’s info. It was a flimsy lie, one I didn’t even believe myself. He probably guessed something was up, but for the right price, he took the job.
It took him longer than usual to crack the phone. He warned me that because it was a hack, the access wouldn’t last very long.
I didn’t care. I took the phone back, ducked into the shadowed alley behind the store, and started searching for the Gallop Energy project data. Without overthinking it, I recorded everything I could find and sent it to Natalie.
By the time I finished, my back was damp with cold sweat. But I didn’t stop.
I knew what I’d face if I got caught, but whenever I remembered that Samuel was responsible for
my best friend’s death, my resolve hardened again.
I went through his contacts, messages, photo gallery-anywhere that might hold private information.
Surprisingly, for someone like Samuel who should’ve been covered in shady secrets, his phone was unusually clean.

Most of it was work documents and some simple life notes.

There were no questionable photos in his gallery either, but Samuel seemed to like taking pictures of his own physique, along with various bank cards and membership cards-probably using the gallery as a memo pad.
I had no patience to learn about Samuel’s private life.
I just wanted to find some trace of my friend in his phone, to confirm the suspicions in my mind.
But after searching everywhere, I found nothing.
Just as I was about to give up, I opened the saved folder in one of his social apps.
Inside was only one photo-a somewhat blurry shot of a note. The handwriting was messy, but
it hit me like a bolt of lightning, sending a chill down my spine.
That distinct, drawn-out penmanship… it was Nova Flynn’s.
The note read, “Thank you for walking this part of the road with me, Samuel.”
It was signed with her name, “Nova.”
So it was true. Samuel had played with her feelings, and he’d clearly known she wasn’t in a good
state.
Samuel had told me before that he thought his “old acquaintance” had brought it on herself— that she’d let love destroy her.
An Alpha, in their arrogance, could so easily crush an ordinary Beta’s life-then act like it never happened at all.
When I got back to the apartment, Samuel was already out of the shower. He’d found a brand- new towel to wrap around his waist. Water droplets traced the lines of his muscles.
Seeing me walk slowly through the door with the shopping bag, he frowned, displeased, “You took too long.”
I didn’t answer. Silently, I handed him the bag and turned to leave.
“Lily,” he suddenly called me back, his voice turning cold, sharp with suspicion. “Did you see my phone?”
“It’s on the table,” I replied flatly.
“I don’t see it.” He stared at me, his gaze sharp enough to peel skin.
