Nathan felt his ears burning first thing in the morning.
He was scratching them as he walked into the office, and his secretary couldn’t help but ask, “Mr. Cole, what’s wrong?”
“I have a feeling someone’s talking smack about me today,” Nathan said. “My ears have been itching all morning. Who has that kind of time?”
His secretary laughed. “Mr. Cole, how do you know someone’s badmouthing you?”
“Li suddenly reappeared. Everyone in the industry knows we’re the ones using the Li Algorithm. I bet I’m the topic of a lot of conversations today, and not all of them are good.”
Still smiling, the secretary placed a stack of files on his desk. “Mr. Cole, these need your signature. Please take a look.”
“Alright, let’s get to work,” Nathan said.
Lillian ignored the outside chatter, focusing only on her own work. Around noon, Nathan left work early to have lunch with her.
“So, tell me, what does it feel like to log into the forum under your legendary ID?”
“It feels like nothing,” Lillian said. “I’m short-staffed right now. If I don’t find some outside help, I’ll have to do everything myself, and I just can’t.”
She continued eating her meal.
“You know,” Nathan said, “I thought you were finally going to reveal your identity when you used your alias.
But you just went on to recruit someone. That’s a bit of a letdown from what I was hoping for.”
“I went on to recruit someone,” Lillian countered. “When they start working at my company, won’t people be able to put two and two together?”
For the sake of her company’s future, she wasn’t deliberately trying to hide the fact that she was Li.
She figured that once the people she hired joined her company, news of such high-profile talent joining would spread quickly through the industry.
When that happened, wouldn’t the outside world figure out her connection to Li?
“I can’t wait to see the looks on Sebastian and Bella’s faces when they find out who you are,” Nathan said.
“I want to take a picture of them and frame it as a memento.
No, wait, I’ll blow it up and hang it in my office. Looking at it every day would be great for my mood.”
“The whole industry is talking about this today,” Lillian said. “Any news from the Blake Group?”
Nathan thought for a moment. “Actually, no, nothing. It’s strange. The Blake Group has been desperate to meet Li and secure the rights to the algorithm.
So why, now that there’s news about Li, are they completely silent? Something’s not right. You should be careful, Li.”
“As long as no one can steal my company’s secrets, it shouldn’t be a big problem,” Lillian said. “Alright, you’ve talked enough for one day. Finish your lunch and get back to your office. I have a lot of work to do.”
Lillian ate sparingly. After finishing, she stood up to clear her dishes.
She had taken two steps when she seemed to remember something. She paused and turned back to Nathan.
“Spit it out, what is it?” Nathan asked.
“I’ve noticed Leonard has been acting a little strange the past couple of days. He’s been all sneaky and secretive, and he keeps blushing. Do you think his condition is getting worse?”
