In this world, the person who understood Debbie the best was Sebastian.
Just as Debbie was the one who understood Sebastian the most.
As mother and son, they had lived together longer than anyone else had been in their lives, so they knew each other inside out.
Because he understood her too well, Sebastian merely listened to her words without believing a single syllable.
Debbie's expression had turned incredibly ugly.
"So what? Isn't this what I deserve?
"I am your mother. I'm your mother! Shouldn't my name be mentioned right alongside yours?
"Why do you get to be the heir to the Blake family, wielding endless wealth at your fingertips?
"While I, as your mother, had to be trapped in some remote backwater, unable to eat well or enjoy the finer things?
"Looking glamorous, wearing nice clothes, carrying designer bags—is that enough? I can't sell these things, and I can't trade them for the life I actually want.
"I even have to ask for permission just to spend an extra dollar.
"I've been sick of this life for a long time.
"Sebastian, the moment you returned to the Blake family, I should have gone with you.
"Shouldn't I? That's how it was supposed to work.
"Why do you get to enjoy a life of luxury while I have to rot in that tiny town?
"Why did the old Blake couple get to monopolize you in the end? You're my son. You are my son.
"I carried you for nine months. Without me, you wouldn't exist!"
Debbie's chest heaved with agitation, the pain causing her remaining hand to clench into a tight fist.
Yet Sebastian just stared at her coldly, his face devoid of any excess emotion.
"But I would rather not exist."
With one sentence, Sebastian crushed all of Debbie's furious excitement.
Even with her most sincere, pleading gaze, Sebastian remained unmoved. "Keep dreaming.
"You're right, I am your son. Even if few people know it, someone always will.
"I have to do what is expected of me, to show those who know my identity that I am not an ungrateful son.
"You raised me, so I will care for you in your old age.
"You're sick, so I will get you treated. I will hire the best doctors in the world and use the best medications. I want everyone who knows to see that I've done right by you."
As Sebastian spoke, Debbie couldn't stop herself from trembling.
How was this any better than her worst fears?
She had previously suspected she wasn't sick at all, that Sebastian was just using it as an excuse to control, torture, and imprison her.
But now, she really was sick, and he still had no intention of letting her go.
Shivering uncontrollably, she asked, "I gave birth to you and raised you. Do you really hate me that much?"
