Hearing Sebastian mention her name, Brandon immediately grew suspicious.
Aren't Bella and Sebastian together every day?
Why was he asking *him* about her?
How strange.
Wouldn't he know if Bella was okay? Why would he need to ask him?
Brandon sensed that there was trouble between the two of them.
“Sebastian, does Bella know about your divorce from Lillian?”
The other end of the line went silent. That silence was as good as a confirmation.
So she knew.
If Bella knew about the divorce, she would definitely start pushing for marriage.
If she was pressuring Sebastian to marry her, that would be a huge problem.
“How is Lillian doing at home? Is her condition any better?”
Brandon noted that Sebastian hadn't answered his question directly, instead changing the subject to Lillian, and he quickly picked up the thread.
“Lillian’s doing alright. She seems to be in good spirits, and her appetite is fine every day, so her condition probably isn't too bad.
She went back to work this morning. She looked full of energy, so at the very least, her illness doesn’t seem to have gotten worse.”
Sebastian replied, “That’s good to hear. I’ll find some time to visit her. I can't reach her since she blocked my number.”
Brandon was smart. From Sebastian's brief words, he understood the situation.
Even though they were divorced, Sebastian was still very concerned about Lillian.
Conversely, when asked if Bella knew about the divorce, he clammed up, which clearly meant he had no intention of moving forward with Bella anytime soon.
If Sebastian were planning to advance his relationship with Bella, he would have told Brandon to manage the family's reaction.
Furthermore, a wedding between him and Bella wouldn't be a secret affair like his marriage to Lillian. It would have to be a grand event, and knowing Bella's personality, she would insist on a huge celebration.
In that case, the Mercer family would absolutely have to be involved.
Brandon’s words twisted something in Sebastian’s gut.
He knew Lillian was seriously ill.
But in his mind, he had never imagined that Lillian could actually die so young.
He couldn't fathom a world where she was gone. Would there ever be another woman who loved him more?
Bella?
Her love couldn't compare to Lillian's.
Bella would never do the things Lillian had done for him.
Lillian had followed him to his school, using her studies as a cover while relentlessly pursuing him. Later, she spent years chasing him, helped him start his business, married him, and gave him a child.
Clutching the phone, Sebastian was suddenly struck by a clear concept of love: he realized he craved the all-consuming devotion Lillian had given him.
Perhaps it was because no woman in his life had ever loved him so profoundly, making him the center of her entire world.
“I can promise you this,” Sebastian said. “I won’t marry Bella until Lillian is better.”
