The sudden shriek cut through the entire hall, bringing the festive atmosphere to an abrupt halt.
Upon hearing Sabrina's cry for help, Martin shot up from his seat and sprinted toward the source of the sound.
The other guests, curious, followed behind him.
When Martin arrived, he was frozen by the sight before him.
At the bottom of the marble staircase, Sabrina was clutching her stomach, her cries for help growing weaker. Beneath her dress, a pool of blood was spreading, like a dark, blooming flower.
Bella, Brandon, and Colin had also followed.
Seeing the scene, Bella pushed through the crowd and rushed to Sabrina's side.
"Mom! Mom, what's wrong?" she cried out in anguish.
Martin finally snapped out of his trance, rushed over, and scooped Sabrina into his arms, yelling frantically, "Get the doctor! Get the doctor over here!"
The family had a doctor on call, who could arrive in two or three minutes.
Sabrina was moved to a sofa, instantly staining the cushions with blood.
The birthday banquet descended into chaos.
People crowded around, anxious to see what had happened to Sabrina.
Only Lillian remained standing high on the second-floor landing, coldly observing the scene below.
As Sabrina writhed in pain on the sofa, her eyes met Lillian's. She struggled to lift a hand and point in Lillian's direction.
Seeing how much Sabrina was bleeding, they knew the baby was likely lost. Deep down, they were pleased, but they couldn't openly side with Lillian.
Brandon called out, "Lillian, what are you doing just standing up there, looking so high and mighty? Get down here right now and explain what happened!"
Just then, a servant shouted to the guests, "Make way! Please, let the doctor through! The doctor's here!"
The crowd parted, and the doctor was led to the front. After a quick examination, he shook his head at Martin. "The fetus can't be saved. We need to get her to a hospital immediately."
Someone had already called an ambulance.
But the drama was far from over.
Lillian slowly descended the stairs, step by step. It was the same staircase where her grandmother had fallen and ended up in a coma. Walking down it now felt like an act of fate.
