Sabrina slapped her own face, tears instantly streaming down her cheeks. “I deserve this,” she cried. “To be called a mistress by someone so young.”
Martin rushed to comfort her.
As the sounds of the drama unfolded, Lillian walked away without a backward glance. She had long grown tired of the Mercer family’s theatrics.
For Bella, both the Mercer family and Sebastian valued her because she is highly capable. Her brilliance was in her career. At this moment, she had yet to secure the partnership with Litech NaLabs, and an influential industry leader with government connections was about to give a lecture in the city. She couldn't afford to waste her time here.
She was suspicious about who might be backing Lillian, but after weighing the possibilities, she concluded that Lillian still lacked real power. A divorced woman with a child and a prison record, with no notable skills—even if she latched onto someone with her looks, how long could that possibly last?
In today's world, it was the independent, capable women with their own careers who thrived. The era of relying on men was over. Why should she waste her time on Lillian?
So, while Martin was still fuming, Bella stood up. “I’m sorry, I have some work to attend to. I’ll be heading upstairs.”
“Bella, aren’t you going to help calm your Mr. Mercer down?” Sabrina asked.
Bella smiled warmly. “Mom, you’re here. That’s all he needs.”
Brandon was also preoccupied with the upcoming industry event. The professor’s lecture was tomorrow, and he had tried every possible way to get a ticket without success. He hadn't wanted to ask Bella, but now it seemed he had no choice. He quickly followed her.
“Bella, I need your help with something.”
After Brandon explained, Bella smiled. “Brandon, you look so worried. You should have told me sooner. While I was never Professor Avery’s student, getting an extra ticket is easy enough. Wait for me at the entrance of Ardenwell University tomorrow, and I’ll take you in with me.”
“Colin, come to my study. I need to talk to you about something.”
In the study.
“Brandon, you’re not going to ask me to talk to Lillian, are you? You know I’ve never been able to win an argument with her,” Colin said.
“If you don’t, should I?” Brandon retorted. “Listen, I just asked Bella about Professor Avery’s lecture, and she said she could get me in, just like that. You know how hard those tickets are to come by, right? Bella said she can just bring someone along, which probably means she has some connection to Professor Avery herself. Her future is only going to get brighter, her career is about to take off. And here’s Lillian, still not appreciating her position in this family. If this continues, her title as the family heiress might really be taken away from her.”
“Brandon, it’s not that serious, is it?” Colin asked.
“Are you blind?” Brandon snapped. “If she keeps this up, the family will disown her sooner or later. Then let’s see her beg on the streets!”
