Zevran.
I was in a meeting with the members of our board and my brothers concerning the shift of power when suddenly, I felt a sharp pain lance through the back of my left knee.
I winced quietly, gritting my teeth; But when I looked up and found my brothers also sporting uncomfortable expressions on their faces, I instinctively knew that this was not a coincidence.
The last time I felt something like this was when Kael was in an accident... well, scratch that, it also happened when Leilani was sick, and now, I couldn’t help but be afraid that she must be in some sort of situation.
Danger perhaps?
I looked up quickly, my heart racing as I turned to the girl speaking and said; "Please excuse me, I have an urgent call to make."
And at my words, everyone on the table turned to look at me. However, while everyone else nodded, my brothers cocked their eyebrows at me. And I knew that they were just as restless as I was. Just as antsy...
Goddess, please protect Leilani... even from me.
’Do you feel it too?’ Caelum’s voice suddenly seeped into my head and I frowned, nodding slightly at him before walking out of the room.
’I do. What’s happening?’ Kael responded coldly, his voice hoarse and flat, sounding through the mindlink like dry ice on sandpaper.
’I think it’s Leilani. I want to call Gavin to ask about her.’ I responded quickly, just as I slipped into my office and went to stand before the glass to ceiling window overlooking the city.
My heart raced as I picked up the phone but just as my fingers hovered over Gavin’s number, Kael’s voice came again. He ordered;
’You should call Frostclaw. He’s been with her the entire time.’
And that... that made me still for a moment. It made me feel somewhat uncomfortable, nervous and irritated.
—Because call me jealous, but it was one thing to know that she always spends a lot of time with Frostclaw and another to acknowledge that fact myself.
Hell, even the thought of her with him still makes me so jealous, and it was infuriating—to say the least— that now, we’d resigned to accepting his existence, especially since knowing that he was actively pursuing her.
I gritted my teeth in anger, and even though I really didn’t want to call him, my worry for Leilani overrode my pride. I sighed. "Okay." And with that, I dialed Alpha Jarek’s number instead.
He picked up on the first ring, his deep baritone seeping through the speaker as he drawled; "Hello?"
"Alpha Frostclaw, it is I, Alpha Zevran... one of the Stormborn brothers, and I am sorry if I am calling at an inappropriate time but—"
"Leilani isn’t here." He cut in, his voice sharp and cold, almost rude.
I gulped down the biting words I was tempted to say to him. And Heavens... sweet heavens... the only reason I was letting him talk to me this way was because I was really, desperately worried about Leilani.
Nothing more.
Exhaling deeply and counting to five in my mind, I finally managed to answer coldly; "Oh, yes! She’s the reason I’m calling. But I do not wish to see her or talk to her..."
But as soon as those words slipped out of my mouth, I instantly regretted it and tried to rephrase; "Now wait, that didn’t come out the way I intended for it to. What I mean is that, we’re still mates and can still feel each other through the bond sometimes."
"And?" Jarek snapped, his voice dripping with disdain.
Goodness, I wanted to punch his face. I wanted to smack his head into the closest wall.
*Deep breaths, deep breaths*
"...And I was in a meeting earlier when I felt her fear and pain. I think she’s in danger and you’re the closest person to her that I know of... and that’s why I called you."
At my words, Jarek made a startled sound.
When he spoke again, he sounded... different. A bit warmer. He asked; "Are you sure?"

That was the last thing I heard. I couldn’t even bring myself to respond as I let the phone clatter to the floor.

"You don’t have to do too much. You can simply leave as soon as you find out that she’s safe." My wolf advised, and with that thought, I began to march over to her front door.
