Leilani.
One moment, my father had the upper hand. He had looked so sure of himself... so dangerous that he made me proud. But in the next minute, all of that shattered, and in the place where a brave man once stood, a man who was visibly afraid now replaced him.
His face fell. His body sagged and his eyes— hollowed out and deep— wouldn’t stop staring in my direction like he was about to lose something precious. And for some reason, something about that look... something about the way he watched me carefully, made my chest ache.
His lips pressed into a thin line as he watched me with a fear so raw, it made my insides tremble. And when he spoke up, his voice had lost its power... its authority. He was pleading.
"Darius..." he drawled softly, calmly. "That’s your sister right there."
"She is not my sister!" He screamed back, his voice seeping into my ear. "She may be your daughter but she’s not my sister!"
"Okay, okay..." father continued, not bothering to argue with him. "It’s me you hate, isn’t it? Kill me then... and let her be." He supplied but Darius, stubborn, didn’t move.
I knew that he couldn’t kill me and for this reason, I was unafraid.
However, I didn’t say this out loud because I was still very stunned by my father’s reaction. Goddess, this is the first time anyone— besides the triplets— would lay down their life for me without hesitation. It was the first time a parent, any parent, would protect me this way in my entire life.
The thought made my throat tighten with so much emotion and I blinked back my tears. I drawled; "Darius..."
And at the sound of my voice, he stiffened. His lips were pressed so close to my face, so close that I feared he was kissing me rather than hurting me. His hand lowered only for a brief second before it tightened one more time when father tried to move close.
That action made me cough and as soon as Darius heard the sound, he loosened his grip one more time, then he pressed his lips to my ear.
"I really loved you, you know!" He hissed, his voice harsh. Desperate even. "You were the first girl I ever loved. I wanted to set things right with you, but obviously you never wanted that."
Something about the way he said those words made me stunned because it sounded real. It sounded honest too, even though he wasn’t someone who could be classified as honest.
I shook my head at him before I could help myself, only to have him frown against my cheek as I mumbled;
"No, Darius..."
"No?" He hissed coldly, "...no? You mean you do not share the same feelings I do? You mean you only tried to use me?"
The hurt in his tone made my throat go dry. My tongue suddenly felt swollen and too heavy to move. I closed my eyes and shook my head.
However, just as I did that, he mumbled something along the lines of: "this is all your fault!" But before I could ask what he meant by that, he pressed the pen into my ear and began to push it in.
And goddess, pain exploded in my ear. I screamed out in anguish as blood gushed from my ear. But he didn’t stop.
If anything, that seemed to spur him on.
For a moment, I was momentarily blinded by my pain. Momentarily frozen at a spot. But that hesitation... that stillness didn’t last long as next thing I know, I was ducking with enough speed to make a normal person stumble. I ignored the pain in my ear and threw him off balance.
The action exerted me to some extent but I was glad when he staggered away from me, his eyes wide and wild. He snarled;
"You—"
But I was fast— too fast.
