Leilani.
By the time the first light from the sun seeped into the room from the slice of space between the curtains, I was already up.
Or can I say that I never fell asleep?
Well, maybe I can because truth be told, I couldn’t sleep. Not after knowing that Darius had been here. Not when it was obvious that he probably knows everything about me while I knew nothing about him.
Maya woke up moments later, and after checking on me and engaging me in some conversations that I wasn’t fully interested in, she rose to her feet and begrudgingly said;
"I’ll need to leave now, Lani! I have a few errands to run and I need to get you some food!"
I waved my hand dismissively when I heard her say that, a small smile playing across my lips as I muttered; "Oh, don’t worry about me! The hospital staff serves us breakfast every morning."
"And I’ve seen the so-called breakfast! It looks like ass! Chalice’s ass!" She snorted, causing me to burst into laughter before I could help it.
She pulled me into a hug and kissed me on the head before walking away, her heeled feet click-clacking against the floor as she went.
And I waited until she was finally gone before I heaved a sigh.
Deep down, I was certain that Jarek would berate me for what I was about to do, but I couldn’t help it— I was so bored— so I took out my iPad from the bag that Maya had come with yesterday and began to work.
I busied myself with adding the finishing touches to TINN’s model and when I was done with that, I started with the new design for the smart traffic system I have been pushing off for as long as I could remember.
The sound of my door creaking open was what finally snapped me out of my trance; but besides watching Agnes slip into my room like a criminal, another thing that surprised me was the fact that there was already a tray of food on my bedside table and I couldn’t even seem to remember hearing anyone come into my room earlier while I worked.
She beamed a smile at me when her eyes met mine, and raising a small box over her head, she squealed; "I got you mango cakes!"
Seeing her right now and realizing that she still remembered the kind of cake I liked made me feel some type of way. I couldn’t say if I was sad or happy. All I knew was that I was grateful.
I returned her smile just as she placed the box onto the table and said; "Hi."
But to my utmost surprise, she didn’t respond right away. She instead pulled me into a tight hug and smiled, whilst burying her face into the crook of my neck as she said excitedly; "Hi, Leilani! How do you do?"
I froze for a moment, my entire body went rigid as I slowly and carefully pulled away from her. I nodded. "I’m fine. I didn’t know you’d come."
"Oh, I came because of Ms Chalice. Your mama asked me to get her some seafood because she asked for it... and I decided that since you’re here as well, it’d be nice to get you something too, seeing as you’re the one who’s really unwell and not her!"
Her response made me cock my eyebrows at her in confusion and I asked; "What do you mean?"
"She fainted, no?"
"Yes, she did." I replied slowly, unsure of where this was headed.
"She always faints!" She answered, waving her hand dismissively while I fought the urge to snort due to how funny that had sounded. "Any time there’s a major thing happening, she faints! And I feel like that’s her escape or her way of diverting everyone’s attention from the fact that she’s a conniving ass biter!"
Now, I couldn’t help it, I chuckled.
A beat of silence passed between us before a thought suddenly settled in my mind, and I raised my eyes to meet her gaze, my voice lowering slightly as I asked; "Why did you still work there even after I paid you enough to help you leave?"
She lowered her gaze at my question and began to fiddle with the hem of her dress. When she looked up at me again, I noticed something weird and conflicting in her gaze. She whispered; "I can’t... not now."
"Why?"
"After... you know... what happened at the wedding, your old folks began to suspect all of us working in the house. They took us all in for questioning and threatened to punish us. I knew then that if I left immediately, they would realize I was behind the leaked footage. So..."
