Zevran.
For a solid amount of time, I stood there stewing in rage and maybe jealousy as I watched Leilani wrap her arms around Frostclaw in a way that she could never do to me.
Her head rested on his chest while his chin sat on the top of her head, but I didn’t miss the way he smirked at me. The way his eyes glinted with a pleasant mischief... and the way he would glare at me for a moment too long one to drop his arms a little until they were resting in her waist.
He was ragebaiting me and winning.
But not winning enough to make me snap.
I smiled at him despite the way I felt and nodded once to Leilani, my eyes roving along the length of her body then to Frostaclaw’s arm still wrapped around her waist as I spat;
"I guess that’s all for now."
She didn’t look at me. She didn’t even turn to acknowledge my presence as she mumbled a half hearted; "thank you," to me, before returning to chit chat with the man who I have now grown to dislike.
By the gods, there was not a living person I hated more than I did him right now, especially with the way he kept watching me with that stupid smirk playing across his face.
Especially since he always tried to rub his closeness with Leilani in at any given opportunity...
A second passed and then two, and then I realized to my utmost disappointment that I didn’t want to leave. That I didn’t want to leave her with him... that I didn’t trust him enough around her.
My traitorous mind flashed back to that event I’d witnessed at her office and at the thought, my chest clenched tight, so I took in a deep breath and sighed, my voice not more than a whisper as I turned to Leilani; "Would you still wish to come here? Are there more questions you want to ask your mother?"
That finally made her turn to look at me and when her eyes rested on my face, I felt this strange pride soar in my chest. This pride that stemmed from the fact that I now had her attention.
She seemed contemplative for a very brief moment, and then she shook her head. "No. I’ve gotten all I want from her."
"And what about ex beta Malakai?" I added and when she shook her head at me, I continued; "Do you not have questions to ask him? Are you not bothered to know how they must’ve been surpressing your wolf?"
She paused then cast a glance at Frostclaw before she muttered. "No. I’d just go for a blood test."
And while that sounded plausible, I was still mad. Mad because she was tossing away all my attempts at getting an opportunity to be close to her one more time.
"And what about Darius?" I continued,
"Who is Darius?" Frostclaw butted in, making my already growing smile to spread even wider.
I lifted my gaze to meet his, and after seeing the stupefied slash confused look on his face, my smile turned darker. I seethed; "That’s none of your business."
He blanched.
And to my utmost bewilderment, Leilani pinned me with a glare then, her voice stern as she turned to him and hissed under her breath; "He’s someone... we’ll talk about him later when we’re alone. For now, I need you to get me out of here. Also, we need to talk about a few more things like Keisha."
My eyes darted from her face to his, and as I did so, my chest squeezed with jealousy. I hated how they were in so much sync with each other. How she could tell him literally anything and everything.
I also hated the way they seemed to have forgotten about my presence beside them as they continued to talk amongst themselves.
And to worsen it all, they soon began to walk away, leaving me watching like the fool like I was... and leaving me wishing that I was the one she trusted. The one she was walking away with.
—And the one she was working with as they soon began to talk about some project my brothers and I have had our eyes on for the longest of time.
I knew then and there that she was lost. That I had finally lost her and that I needed to end this once and for all.
I wasn’t even thinking when my mouth slowly opened and I muttered the first thing I could think of;
"Let’s reject each other when this is all over." I said, but by this time, she was actively talking to Frostclaw, lost in whatever they were talking about as she walked out of the place with him hand in hand.
Goddamnit!
Caelum.
Huh?
"I can feel your anger towards Zevran."
Oh shit! Sometimes I forget about the damn bond between us.
For a moment, I stayed still, my hands closing tightly against my phone until another thought struck me: if he can feel it, then can Zevran feel it too?
Just as I thought these things, Zevran himself stepped into the house and as soon as his eyes landed on mine, I knew then and there that something was wrong.
He didn’t look happy.
He didn’t even look like he’d just had the time of his life, and call me crazy but I think I liked that. I liked it more than knowing that he’d had her all to himself.
Kael was the first to break the silence. He glanced once at him and asked; "Is anything the problem?" But Zevran didn’t answer right away, he snorted;
"Why are you both here? Were you waiting for me?"
"We were waiting so that you’d come tell us what happened with you yesterday!" I answered, unable to hide the bite from my tone.
At the sound of my voice, Z turned to glare at me and in a voice not above a whisper, he mumbled;
"It did not go well."
"Huh? Why?"
"That girl is in more danger than we could ever think... coupled with the fact that she seems to be in love with Frostclaw."
And at the mention of that name, I lost every last bit of goodwill left in me.
