Leilani.
’My mates will never do something like that!’ was the first thought I had before I realized how stupid it sounded.
How weird. How utterly naive I would seem by saying something as obnoxious as that.
I mean, these same mates have been the ones to torture me. To hurt me and treat me so poorly. So why the hell would I think differently about them now?
Why do I, for any reason, think that Zevran with all of his kindness, cannot team up with his brothers to hurt me?
I vaguely remembered how he’d helped me that day. How he had driven me to his so-called ’safety’, and now, I could not help but think that maybe... just maybe it was part of the plan. That maybe he’d done that to make it seem more believable...
"Or maybe he’d done it for you to easily trust him." Darius completed for me, slipping into the barriers of my head like it was his second home. And that made me frown deeply.
"Get out of my head!" I spat, rolling my eyes when he threw his hands up and bowed his head.
Goddess, he didn’t even seem apologetic as he muttered the words; "I’m sorry."
And deciding that I didn’t want to deal with him right now, I turned away. At that time, my eyes darted back to my security guard still pinned against the floor, and I felt something akin to rage bubble up within me, even if it was for a second as I turned to the girl— Samantha— and seethed; "Get off him!"
She paused, looked at me then at Darius and then shook her head slowly. "I’m sorry, I can’t. I don’t take orders from—"
"Let him go!" I yelled at the top of my voice, my breath catching when she was shoved backward by an invisible force and a loud cracking sound followed by a scream pierced through the air.
Her back hit the wall behind her with a loud crash, and I saw something akin to admiration mixed with fear appear on Darius’s face before he turned back to me, his voice dropping a few notches as he drawled;
"You’re angry."
I rolled my eyes but said nothing. I didn’t want to talk to him anymore.
"You’re letting your anger rule you... and people like you should not allow that. You should be very conscious of—"
"You mean to tell me that I’m meant to wear a tutu and dance around my car after hearing that my mates had paid some unruly Lycans to attack me?"
"They are rogues, mamacita." He sassed, coming to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear as he looked down at me, his purple eye swirling with some strange kind of glint as he leaned closer.
And goddess, as soon as his fingers brushed over my skin, that weird chill erupted along the length of my spine again. I shuddered slightly but deciding to act brave, I folded my arms across my chest and began to huff and puff, scrunching up my nose when his overwhelming cologne filled my nostrils.
"Darius..."
"Yes, love."
Ewwww!
"Those two things mean the same thing." I said dryly, "Unruly Lycans and rogues. All I am trying to say now is that I am mad after hearing that they were sent to attack me by my mates."
"And why are you mad?" He asked suddenly— too suddenly; thus making my throat go dry. "Do you still harbor some stupid affection for them?"
I didn’t know how to respond to that or how to tell him that even though I wasn’t so surprised, it still felt like betrayal in a way.
I stopped. "However, the person who needs help is you. You are in danger."
"What kind of danger?"
"Your family kind of danger. Your sister is plotting to have you eliminated. Your mates are no good either. Your friend, Jarek is on the verge of completely going feral. Your mother is probably chilling in her cell and that bastard, Malakai is not going to go down without a fight— not like he has so much fight left anyways." He said, counting off all of my troubles like they were nothing.
His words put me on edge and made me flustered in a way because I couldn’t help but wonder how he knows so much about me and I could swear that I’ve never spoken about them to him.
However, I was just about to ask him that, when he continued coldly. He said; "I can help you."
I didn’t want his help. I didn’t want him around me.
"No, thank yo—"
"I am the only one who can relate to the things you’re experiencing. Gosh, I was also fed Moonveil draught at some point because my father, the coward, was too scared of the powers I possessed..."
"You mean our father?" I cut in, interrupting me and I noticed the way his eyes flashed again before he shook his head.
"No."
"Wait, I don’t get you." I hissed in frustration. "You told me the last time that your father is my father and that we are siblings."
"I know what I told you Lani!" He spat, almost yelling, "... but I lied."
Oh, bloody hell!
