Chapter 334: Someone I hate.

Leilani.

For the first couple of minutes after I dropped that bombshell, no one moved nor spoke. And while Maya’s arms around my shoulders had long gone slack, Gavin looked like he’d just had a run in with the devil.

His face was ashen and pale, and his lips... oh his lips had long turned into a weird shade of purple. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

He stared at me like he was just quite seeing me for the first time, his gaze piercing yet guilty. And then, as if on autopilot, they both began to speak at the same time.

"Leilani, I don’t think that’s correct—"

"How are you even sure of that, Leilani?"

Their words, so flippantly uttered, made me utterly devastated. My hands balled into fists by my sides and I dug my nails so deep into my skin until I began to bleed.

I could feel my face getting hot and I needed no soothsayer to know that I was probably as red as a beetroot right now, fueled only by my rage. I hissed; "And what makes both of you think that I may be wrong?"

"It’s just... it’s just that..." Maya began to talk but slowly snapped her lips shut, her face taking on every emotion you could think of ranging from pity to fear to sadness and then worry.

She lowered her head. "Isn’t your dad a Lycan? Wasn’t he rumored to be an alpha too? The man who was killed, according to Gavin’s story, was a thief who deserved to die, and—"

"If you say the word ’thief’ to me one more time, I would smack your face so hard, your teeth would have no other option but to jump right out of your mouth!" I gritted out, ignoring the way her eyes widened ever so slightly before she slowly turned to look away.

And hell, I understand that many of you would be mad at me for speaking to her in that manner. Many of you would label me pompous and rude or spoiled. But could you ever stop to imagine how you would feel if you were in my shoes?

Would you be all sweet and sugary if you had just learned that your biological father had been branded a thief and killed by the same people that swore to protect you?

The way my tears streamed down my face was torrential. It burned the corners of my eyes, leaving nothing but an uncomfortable heat behind.

My chest felt tight too, laden with guilt and pain and a sorrow so intense, I could barely breathe through it.

So I rose to my feet, my eyes trained on Gavin who for some reason could no longer bring himself to look me in the eyes and spat; "Did you see him?"

He blanched. "See who?"

"Did you see the man before he was killed?"

The look of pure horror on his face was almost comical. It would’ve been funny if the situation wasn’t this dire. He nodded quickly;

"Yes... yes, I did. He looked pretty powerful at first but after he was beaten to a pulp, he just seemed... ordinary. His hair was a mass of dirty..." he began to say but suddenly trailed off when something akin to realization dawned on him.

He gasped. "He had silver hair... just like you."

And by the gods, when I heard those words, I could swear that I heard my heart break. The sound was loud and deafening. It rang in my ears and brought a sharp pain to the back of my skull.

I couldn’t help but clutch at my chest as I staggered backward. And just as I did that, Gavin tried to reach out to me but I swatted his hands away. My voice was cold as I asked; "What else?"

He frowned. "Leilani..."

"What else can you remember about him?"
