Leilani.
As soon as those words echoed around the already quiet corridor, my heart sank.
Like it literally dropped into a deep dark twisted hole somewhere in my guts, causing ripples and ripples to spread out until I was sure that my insides were all twisted and tied up in knots so tight, I could barely breathe through it.
My throat suddenly felt dry so when I said the words: "Why? Why is an induced coma in the equation?" it sounded more like a cough than an actual word.
Thankfully, the doctor listened enough to hear me clearly and actually understand me because he then cast a look that seemed more pitiful than professional at me as he muttered; "It is to help his body regenerate all his lost strength and in this case, slow down the effects of the poison while we seek faster ways to drain the poison out of him."
Poison.
Drain.
Coma.
All of these words clashed violently in my head like an unforeseen tornado, and suddenly my knees grew so weak, I had no other choice but to lean my entire weight against Caelum— who also seemed very weak by the way.
"In his personal file, you were listed as his next of kin..." the doctor suddenly said, snapping me out of my train of thought. My head snapped up to look at him, mostly because his words shocked me so much, I could barely contain my shock, "...so I was thinking if it is possible to get the go-ahead from you."
"Huh?"
"We need permission to carry on with the procedure needed to aid his recovery," He answered quickly, sounding slightly annoyed, "...and you are the only one who can give that to us right now. So please, madam, will you?"
At his words, I gulped, turned to Zevran who nodded once as if silently saying: "yes, you totally should."
But I was unconvinced.
Goddess, I didn’t even want to do it because for some reason, I cannot place or wrap my head around why I couldn’t seem to trust that decision.
When everyone turned to look at me as if silently waiting for my decision, my heart raced in my chest with a frenzy that immediately made my hands clammy. I gulped.
"I need to speak to him."
"Who?" The doctor cocked his eyebrows at me. "Your husband there?"
I followed his pointing hand, and when my eyes landed on Kael, a small—unnecessary— blush crept up my cheeks. The sensation made my face sting and I lowered my head to hide the blush coloring my skin only for a second before lifting it back up.
"No. I need to speak with Jarek. Jarek, your patient."
He quickly shook his head at me. "Ahh, him? You can not. He’s asleep right now."
"Then I need to see him even though it’s only for a couple of seconds. I need to be sure that this is a good idea and that it is what he needs."
The silence that settled in the room as soon as I said those words was deafening. It echoed loudly, enveloping us like some kind of stormy cloud.
I saw him frown slightly before he turned away. His eyes and voice cold as he said; "Okay."
And with that, he walked away, leaving me to ponder over everything that he’s just said to me, especially the part where I had been listed as Jay’s next of kin. I also watched him walk forward to converse with a few nurses before he slowly walked away while one of the nurses came forward.
She said softly; "Hello ma’am, I am Nurse Suzan and I am here to take you to Mr Frostclaw."
Oh...
