Leilani.
For a couple of minutes, after he made that statement, the room felt like it had been plunged into utter confusion.
The tension in the air was so thick, it could be cut through with a knife and the air suddenly felt so cold, I would’ve almost imagined it was winter if I didn’t know better.
But I knew better.
And I knew that this was all Uncle Theon.
My eyes snagged away from Caelum’s face to meet that of Uncle Theon, and by the goddess, the look on his face was murderous but I couldn’t ascertain why he was suddenly pissed when he’d been at least manageable only a few minutes ago.
It was so terrifying that I could have sworn that he was completely capable of freezing hell fire over with those eyes if he wanted to. And ladies and gentlemen, those eyes were completely on me. Not on my mates, not on the pen which now drummed against the table— a result of my panicking state.
It was on me.
I gulped when a strange kind of energy welled up in my throat and no matter how many times I swallowed hard, it wouldn’t go. It felt like a lump, one that I could not get rid of, and one that seemed utterly determined to block out my airflow.
I choked out; "Uncle Theon...!"
But he didn’t respond. Instead, he turned to look at me with eyes so dark, it made my blood run cold. The look in his eyes felt as though he was saying: ’do not fucking call me Uncle Theon one more time,’ but I was too uncomfortable to care.
Too flustered to make out whatever was wrong with me and the atmosphere... and completely confused as to why he was acting this way.
A moment of silence passed between us, one that was soon disrupted when Zevran’s weight pressed into my table, causing the thick wood to scrape noisily against the floor.
I flinched at the sound and turned to look at his white washed face, and I can swear that in that moment, I saw something akin to fear in his eyes.
His lips moved as if in a bid to say something but those words never came out. So I lowered my head and whispered; "Excuse us."
My mates turned to look at me like I was mad but none of them, even though they seemed frightened, tried to move.
My eyes snagged on to Uncle Theon to find him finally watching them for the first time today. The look in his eyes was predatory, causing goosebumps to spread across my skin all over again. But that was not all. There was something else in those eerily dark purple eyes that gleamed under the light.
Something akin to hatred.
A very dark twisted kind of hatred that came with so much emotional energy, it was suffocating.
I drawled; "Come sit, uncle."
But he didn’t move. Once again, he glared at me at the mention of the word ’uncle."
Another beat of silence passed between us and when it became glaring that my mates wouldn’t move, that they wouldn’t leave, he finally came to sit, clasped his hands together and drawled low enough that only me should’ve heard. He said;
"I have something to tell you, Leilani."
I cocked my eyebrows, my voice barely above a whisper as I asked; "What is it about?"
I noticed the way his eyes trailed along my face with a softness that was a very stark contrast to the iciness he had used in regarding the triplets earlier. But just before I could worry about it, he asked;
"Where is Maurice?"
I froze.
Maurice?
Maurice as in my mother?
The mention of that woman’s name made me gulp and I didn’t even realize I did that until I felt a tightness in my chest. "My mother?"
At the sound of my question, he tipped his head to the side and watched me with keen interest— just the type of interest that reminded me of the first day we met.
I could still remember that rainy night like it was the back of my palm. I could still remember how aloof he had been even though he was literally saving me. I also couldn’t forget how strangely comfortable I had felt around him... so why the fuck am I being cautious now?

Exactly how much does this man know?
