Chapter 54: What happens?

Zevran.

"You guys can’t be serious right now, right?" Leilani hissed, her eyes widening in bewilderment as she glanced between my brothers and I.

And for the first time, I realized something: she was utterly done with us.

The look on her face wasn’t surprise, it was of horror. It was fear. Fear of being tied down to us. Fear of being with us.

That realization made my chest ache. It made my breathing go shallow and my body tremble with a mixture of fear and pain. And then panic began to creep in.

I stretched out my hands towards her when I noticed she was trembling uncontrollably but she stepped back, her eyes thinning in disgust. She snorted; "You’re all insane. You’re inhumane!"

"Leilani, sit the fuck down and stop acting like the world is revolving around you!" Caelum spat, and at that, she quickly turned to him.

"Oh, that’s where you’re wrong, dickhead!" She hissed, making me stunned. "The whole world doesn’t revolve around me, but my own world does. My life does! And all you’ve ever done is create chaos in it!"

That stung. That stung like a motherfucking bitch.

"We reject your rejection, Leilani," Kael seethed from beside me. "...and I’d advise you to look for better, more effective ways to cut us off if that’s really what you’re after."

Tears pooled in her eyes. One that she didn’t bother stopping as they trailed down her face. At this sight, even the usually brazen Caelum went silent. I felt frozen in place.

Kael however, was the most brave one. He tentatively walked over to her, but just as he was about to wipe the tears off her face, she slapped off his hand so aggressively that Kael stumbled, his eyes wide in shock.

"I’ll destroy you," she seethed, her voice cold. Raw. Flat. It sent shivers down my spine. It sent Caelum sitting his ass on his chair. My jaw dropped. "I’ll destroy you three for destroying my life... that I promise you." She spat, and with that, turned and stumbled out of the restaurant like the devil was hot on her tail.

For a moment, no one moved. No one tried to go after her. No one even spoke.

We had been so shaken by the entire event. Still experiencing aftershocks from the storm that had been Leilani’s threatening voice that we couldn’t even afford the luxury of breathing.

But for some reason, I didn’t regret it.

I didn’t regret holding onto her, even though I’d seemed desperate. I didn’t regret refusing to reject her.

Kael finally turned to me after a moment. Something in his eyes felt like he was troubled. He mumbled; "Her eyes glowed."

At that, Caelum finally raised his head, a flicker of unease settling on his features. He nodded briskly at Kael, his eyes never leaving mine as he added; "She had an aura."

And they were both right.

There was something definitely different about Leilani these days. Something strange in the way she had pushed me earlier this morning. Something different in the air surrounding her.

A shiver ran up my spine at the thought. I whispered; "I’m afraid you’re both right. I feel it too."

"Is it her wolf? Does she really have a wolf now?... Isn’t that, like, impossible?" Caelum asked, but because I had no real response, I remained silent, musing over it myself.

Silence descended upon us until Kael finally spoke again. "Maybe she’s an exemption."

"Huh?"

"Maybe she’s one of the few werewolves that manage to get their wolves later in life. How old is she? Isn’t she like twenty four?"

"She’s twenty three." I snapped irritatedly, fighting the urge to roll my eyes. "How can you not know her age?"

"Because she’s not so important?" Kael clapped back, and goddess, I almost ripped his lips off.

"Yeah, she can never be as important as Chalice." Caelum spat, and gods, I hated that I would be tied to these two dumbos for the rest of my life. That I was cursed to be born with them in the first place.

I downed my drink in one fluid motion and pointed to the two of them, one after the other; I asked; "And do you know Chalice’s age?"

"Of course, we do!" Kael and Caelum scoffed in unison. "She was twenty three in June."
