Chapter 90: A strange obsession with Leilani.

Chalice.

"I don’t have a mate." Gavin finally spat after a moment of tense silence, but I already knew that he was lying.

His eyes bore into mine for a moment too long, and for the first time, I saw something in them that I’ve never seen in my entire life: Irritation... and maybe anger.

Father and mother turned to him, their expressions disbelieving. But he simply shrugged at them and turned back to me. "I don’t have a mate. I met a girl, yes. But that’s all there is... and it’s none of your damn business!"

"Why does it feel like you’re protecting your mate or something? Are you hiding her?" I teased Gavin as he brought a forkful of pasta to his mouth, but as soon as I said that, his face darkened.

He spat; "Who even told you all that?"

"Kael."

"Then maybe you should go to him too. Protect or hide him... or whatever nonsense you just said!" He snapped, causing my eyes to widen in shock.

His reaction was both suspicious and grating on my nerves. And he never talks to me like this. I spat; "You don’t have to be such a bitch about it! And I don’t need to protect Kael! He can take good care of himself!"

At that, Gavin scoffed derisively. "If he doesn’t need protection like you just said, then maybe you should go ask him why I found him at Leilani’s porch this evening, talking to her like she’s the one he truly wants and not you."

That struck like a blow.

A very hard blow.

I reeled, staggering on my feet as I fell backward. But he didn’t move an inch even as I tumbled to the floor. Mother however, was different, she rushed to my side quickly, her face twisting in worry as she helped me up to my feet. And then she growled at Gavin;

"Why do you have to say such nonsense just to get back at your sister?! Why are you being so impossible today?"

Gavin rolled his eyes at her but said nothing as he chewed on his chicken breasts. By the time he was done, he dropped his fork and rose to his feet, his eyes meeting mine for a brief second before he murmured; "I didn’t say anything that isn’t true. And if you doubt me, ask Alpha Kael yourself."

Our parents froze, and I... I felt like my world was coming to an end.

Did Leilani say something to Kael?

Was that why he asked me that question some minutes ago?

It wasn’t until this moment that something I’d been trying so hard to push to the back of my mind rushed forward: the smell on Kael’s clothes when he arrived.

He’d smelled... normal but with a hint of something else. Something different. Something feminine. And now, I knew that that feminine thing had been Leilani.

My blood boiled.

Tears streamed down my face as the realization dawned on me and with a firm shake of my head, I turned away.

As I walked off, I heard father and mother rushing after me, screaming as they tried to catch up. But Gavin never followed.

Did Leilani say something to him as well?

Am I suddenly losing everything that took so long for me to build?

I cried harder as I made my way back to the triplets’ mansion, and as I did, I made a resolve to myself: That I ought to crush Leilani before she takes everything from me.

That I had to destroy her before she slips back into everyone’s life like a pest.
