Faux Vows, True Desires novel Chapter 527

"You're back."

The masked woman spoke with a tone reminiscent of a wife waiting for her husband's return.

As Keith walked in, he shrugged off his jacket. "Yeah, I'm back. You're early this time."

Darlene chuckled softly. "I am, aren't I?"

Her sister had a last-minute business trip and wouldn’t be home tonight, so Darlene seized the opportunity to visit Keith at Skywatch without hesitation.

"You haven't had dinner yet?" Keith asked, hanging his jacket neatly before taking the box of cookies from her hands. "You shouldn't eat these. They're not nutritious. What do you want to eat? I'll whip something up for you."

Darlene shrugged with a hint of a grin. "You know it's not easy for me to come here. I have to make the most of my time, so I didn’t have time for dinner. I searched your room and only found this half-opened box of cookies."

"Those are my sister's. She left them behind when she last visited."

Darlene reminisced, "The last time I was here, you made me a bowl of chicken noodle soup. It was pretty good. I wouldn’t mind having that again."

"Sure thing." Keith set the cookies aside, cautioning her, "Don't eat too many. You'll spoil your appetite. I'll get started on the soup."

"I'm not worried about ruining my appetite." Darlene continued munching on the cookies, thinking that Lucy had good taste—these cookies were delicious.

Keith let her be and headed to the kitchen to start cooking.

Meanwhile, the guards stationed outside, nestled in the huge oak trees, were on high alert. The masked woman had once again slipped into Keith's quarters without a sound, like a ghost. They were baffled by how she bypassed the estate's top-notch security system. Thankfully, she wasn’t an assassin, or the consequences would have been unimaginable.

A short while later, Keith returned with a steaming bowl of noodle soup, topped with shredded chicken, egg, and a sprinkle of scallions. He placed it in front of Darlene, who quickly set aside the cookies and accepted the utensils he handed her, diving into the soup with enthusiasm.

Keith sat beside her, watching as she ate. Seeing her enjoy the meal brought a subtle warmth to his eyes, though he wasn’t aware of it.

"What do you like to eat? I'll keep it stocked in my room for you. I don't want you to think I'm a lousy host for always serving noodles," Keith said in his deep, calm voice.

The guards outside, eavesdropping, detected an unexpected hint of tenderness in their master's words.

"Keith’s homemade noodles are more than just a meal. The fact that he cooks for me at all shows how well he treats an unexpected guest like me. Don't worry, I don't think you're a bad host," Darlene replied, eating with a graceful ease that Keith found captivating.

Watching her eat, he felt a pang of hunger himself.

"So, what brings you here tonight, Darlene? It can't just be because you missed me," Keith teased.
