"It's simple.’ Charlie said, "Three years ago, I got drunk and slept with a girl. She got pregnant and didn't tell me, then went abroad to study. She came back this year, and only today did I find out that Kya is my daughter"

"Just like that?" Mr. James was skeptical.

Charlie nodded, “Just like that."

Mr. James scoffed, "But I heard from your mom that the girl's family background is a bit complicated, and she had used Kya as an excuse to get close to you."

"Dad." Charlie's lips curled into a faint smirk, "The issue at hand isn't her motives for getting close to me, but that she still isn't willing to accept me. So, let's talk about marriage once I've won her over."

Mr. James was taken aback, "Who's talking about marriage?"

“Aren't you, by discussing her family situation?" Charlie raised an eyebrow.

Mr. James was speechless.

Charlie glanced at his watch, "I need to put Kya to bed. You should get some sleep too. You'll be busy soon enough."

Mr. James watched as Charlie left, initially hoping for a more detailed conversation, but was brushed off within a few sentences. And it seemed like he didn't manage to get any useful information out of him.

Mr. James sipped his iced tea, noting that his son's ability to dodge questions had improved. Yet, even though they only spoke a few sentences, he could tell that his son was very protective of the girl.

Mr. James furrowed his brows slightly, sensing that this time, things were different.

Similarly, Charlie didn't give Mrs. James a chance to question him, and directly took Kya to his bedroom.

Mrs. James had already arranged for Kya’s pajamas, baby items, and even had over a dozen sets of clothes delivered overnight.

Kya, lying on Charlie's king-size bed, was a little glum, "I miss Mommy.

Charlie laid down next to her, "Stay with me for a couple of days. Mommy will come by in a few days."

Kya stared at him with her big, dark eyes, “Are you really my daddy?"

Perhaps because she had been tired from the day, Kya quickly fell asleep in his arms.

Charlie put his phone away, looking at the little one in his arms. He had always liked Kya. Telling her stories and putting her to bed had always felt comforting.

But now, it felt completely different.

This was his daughter, the daughter Emily had given birth to.

Charlie couldn't take his eyes off Kya, feeling that the more he looked at her, the cuter she became, and the more she resembled him.

A few faint knocks at the door caught Charlie's attention. It was his mom pushing the door open to come in.

Mrs. James looked at them lovingly, whispering, “Is Kya asleep?"
