"Really?" Sabina joked with a playful smirk, "I thought the rumor mill would have it that it's my stellar competence that keeps me by Mr. Lamont's side!"
Jonathan raised an eyebrow, sensing something different about Sabina today.
"Absolutely, absolutely!" Mr. Dalton chimed in promptly, "To be Mr. Lamont's executive assistant, one must certainly possess extraordinary skills!"
The others joined in with their compliments, eager to flatter,
"Ms. Macclain's years of service by Mr. Lamont's side are a testament to her talent and fortitude!"
"Not only is Ms. Macclain capable, but she's also gorgeous. Mr. Lamont is one lucky man!"
"Only someone like Mr. Lamont could attract top talent like Ms. Macclain!"
A gentle smile graced Sabina's usually reserved face, her lips curving slightly at the edges.
Jonathan disliked attending these soirées, and so did Sabina, but today, she found the experience surprisingly pleasant.
She didn't have to say a word for others to remind Jonathan of her worth.
She had been by his side for so long; perhaps he had taken her presence for granted.
She needed these people to jog his memory.
She refused to continue in this lukewarm existence by his side! Word had it that Estelle had left J City – an opportunity from the heavens. She was determined to seize it!
All through the party, she stayed close to Jonathan, enduring a night full of praise.
At ten o'clock, Jonathan left the gathering, with Sabina following closely behind, asking with concern, "Mr. Lamont, you've had quite a bit to drink. Are you feeling alright?"
Jonathan turned, his gaze on her was distant, "Why are you here?"
He glanced back, "You can take a cab; expense it to the office."
Sabina's face stiffened.
Millard had already stepped out, holding the car door open for Jonathan.
Jonathan got in, not sparing a glance for Sabina, left standing in the cold breeze.
As Millard drove off, he inquired, "Why was Sabina there?"
Jonathan, slightly inebriated, gazed out the window, his voice chilly, "She's overstepping her bounds, becoming less and less astute."
Millard didn't pursue the topic of Sabina and instead asked, "Back to the family estate or the Royal Mansion?"
Jonathan leaned back, feigning sleep, "The Royal Mansion."
