A scream shattered the silence as the hound met a violent end, his neck snapping under Jonathan's boot before tumbling from the tall oak.
Estelle glided down the trunk, her feet clamping onto a guard's head below, her legs twirling and twisting with force. With a flip, she snatched the guard's gun and took aim at another hound lunging at her from an adjacent tree.
The hound was hit mid-leap and plummeted. Estelle never missed a beat, launching herself into a guard drawn by the commotion, wrestling his gun from his grip and tossing it to Jonathan.
Jonathan covered Estelle as he squeezed the trigger, dropping two hounds hot on her heels. The pack of hounds was nearly wiped out, and the guards surged forward.
Jonathan's crew, always on his six, protected Estelle relentlessly. When they ran out of bullets, they fought hand-to-hand, seizing any opportunity to strike back with reclaimed weapons.
The guards' numbers dwindled, but their gunfire intensified, enraged by the tenacity of these four.
Estelle and Jonathan moved in perfect sync—one in danger, the other swooping in to rescue, then splitting up to scatter the enemy's focus.
When the enemy was dispersed, they closed in again, striking from both sides, taking down their targets one by one.
Their skills were matched, especially Jonathan, who fought with ferocity, as if he owned the battleground.
Though outnumbered, their guerilla warfare experience shined through, using the forest as both shield and spear. In the dim woodland, the four moved with lightning speed and brutal precision. After an initial scramble with the hounds, Estelle began to turn the tide. But something felt off.
Raiden had left Triceratops to fend off Gab and was hell-bent on trapping her in Zion. If Raiden and Triceratops had conspired, Gab would be in graver danger, especially since the cobalt bombs at Silver Valley's border were at stake.
Suddenly, the roar of plane propellers filled the sky, ropes dropped, and mercenaries in dark camo, armed to the teeth, descended upon Zion's guards with a fierce onslaught.
The guards were routed, scattering into the woods.
Jonathan frowned. "What dangers did you face on sublevel twelve?"
Estelle's eyes narrowed, her tone grave. "This time, I'll have Josiah with me; we won't face the same risks. Raiden knows Gab and me too well. I'm worried Triceratops anticipated Gab's move and set an ambush at Silver Valley's military base. Please back him up, I'm counting on you!"
"Don't worry, I'm on it!" Jonathan smoothed her tousled hair, nodding with a calm resolve. "I'll leave some men to distract Raiden's crew. Be careful, and if danger strikes, I'll be back in a flash."
"Understood," Estelle nodded solemnly. "And stay safe!"
"Promise," Jonathan pulled her into a rough embrace, his voice hoarse, "you're my life, always remember that."
"I will!"
