Old Mr. Jarvis seemed as cool as a cucumber, turning to Old Mr. Quintin and saying, "He's not a kid anymore, no need for you to fuss so much. Let's get on with our game!"
Old Mr. Quintin huffed, "What’s wrong with showing a bit of concern? Not everyone’s like you, not caring or asking about anything."
"Isn’t that better? I get to relax, and they’re happy being free and easy!" Old Mr. Jarvis responded nonchalantly.
Old Mr. Quintin snorted, "If you had been a bit more involved with Estelle, she wouldn’t have ended up marrying into the Lamont family and being neglected for three years!"
"What’s wrong with marrying into the Lamont family? That was Estelle being far-sighted!" Old Mr. Jarvis declared boldly, "Now, isn’t that Lamont boy completely wrapped around her finger?"
The two continued their chess game and argument simultaneously, neither one interfering with the other.
Evelyn pressed her lips together, smiling at Gabriel, "Grandpa and Old Mr. Jarvis arguing is always so entertaining. I find it quite amusing to listen to!"
Gabriel nodded slightly, "I’m heading upstairs!"
Evelyn followed, "Gabriel, the kitchen’s made some cake, do you want to try some?"
"No, thanks!" Gabriel responded coldly, heading up the stairs.
Evelyn, leaning on the banister, watched his retreating figure with a look of sad resignation.
What friends could Gabriel possibly have in J City? He must be going to see Sylvia.
Sylvia was indeed a breathtakingly beautiful woman, one that could make any other woman feel inferior. And she felt no exception.
But what did it matter?
For a family like the Jarvises, marriage was all about matching social status, just like Estelle, who married into the Lamont family.
Gabriel would never marry a woman with a background in public relations.
If he was planning to marry, he surely would have brought her home to meet Old Mr. Jarvis by now!
Thinking this, Evelyn felt a glimmer of hope.
After Old Mr. Jarvis left, he spent some time looking through the company documents, then stepped out to the balcony for a smoke. Coming back in, he randomly picked a book to read but soon realized just how boring and long the time could feel.
As evening approached, a servant came up to say a package had arrived for him.
A package?
Gabriel opened it to find a coat sent by express from Sylvia, the same style as hers.
He took the coat out of the box and hung it in his closet.
As dusk fell, Jason returned home and, seeing Gabriel, his usually impassive face softened, "Gabriel!"
Gabriel turned, nodding slightly.
After exchanging a few words, Jason's phone rang, and he stepped aside to answer.
It was Sophia Jones.
