Her eyes were vacant, an abyss of emptiness, fixed on an unseen point as if caught in a still frame. The world outside was hidden behind curtains, leaving her with nothing but a faint sliver of light filtering through. She stared at it intently.
She watched as the light transitioned from a weak glimmer to a blazing brightness, morphing into shades of orange and warm yellow, before slowly fading as dusk descended, until the last trace of light disappeared, plunging her world back into darkness and silence. For the past couple of days, her life had been a continuous cycle of darkness to light and back to darkness, endlessly repeating.
She wondered when this cycle would finally stop. Closing her dry eyes, she clenched her hand tightly, feeling the cartoon keychain digging painfully into her palm. In the darkness, after what felt like an eternity, her phone suddenly rang, its sound jarringly loud in the quiet room. Ignoring it at first, the ringing persisted.
She grabbed it, holding it to her ear, her voice hoarse, "Hello?"
"Boss!" It was Milanda's voice, frantic and anxious, "Sunny went to meet a client tonight. She called me half an hour ago saying the people from New Sight were forcing her to drink and wouldn't let her leave. I tried calling back, but her phone's off now."
Sylvia paused for a few seconds, then sat up, fighting off dizziness, "Where is she?"
"At the Blue Oasis. I'm here now, but I don't know which room," Milanda was almost in tears, "Boss, do you think Sunny's in trouble?"
Sylvia's lifeless gaze turned sharp, "Don't worry, I'm on my way. Keep trying to call Sunny!"
"Okay," Milanda quickly agreed.
Sylvia took a moment to gather herself before heading to the bathroom. She splashed her face with cold water and tied up her hair. Without bothering to change out of the clothes she had worn back from C City, she threw on a coat and headed out.
In the car, Sylvia called Estelle, "Estelle, it's Sylvia. Can you do me a favor?"
Estelle and Jonathan were watching a movie. She got up and walked to the balcony, "Tell me."
"One of my employees went to the Blue Oasis tonight, and now we can't reach her on her phone. Do you know anyone there who could check the CCTV for me?" Sylvia asked.
"What's going on?" Jonathan asked.
Estelle replied, "Sylvia's friend is in trouble at the Blue Oasis. I've asked Manley to check the surveillance."
Jonathan frowned, "Why not contact Amiee Jordan?"
Estelle explained, "Amiee's in a tournament these days, hardly picks up her phone. I was afraid we wouldn't be able to reach her."
She leaned in for a quick kiss, "I'm worried Sylvia can't handle it alone. I think I should go check it out."
Jonathan nodded, standing up, "I'll come with you!"
