Sophia paused, feeling a familiar twinge at the mention of Robin. Reflecting on their time together now felt like a distant memory from another lifetime. The breakup had been painful, but thankfully Jason was there for her. He kept her active, taking her on runs and spontaneous adventures, always ensuring she stayed busy and didn't succumb to self-pity.
Taking a sip of her smoothie, she said, "We have to look forward, right? Crying over it won't change anything."
"Why did you two break up?" Crystal asked, her curiosity piqued.
"It was just a clash of personalities," Sophia replied.
Crystal seemed a bit disappointed, "No chance of getting back together? After all those years, you're just letting it go?"
Sophia's tone was resolute, "No, it's definitely over."
Looking back, her crush on Robin was more about admiration from afar. She rarely dared to be around him, instead using him as a role model to motivate herself to improve. Those years weren't wasted; she gained a lot from the experience, which was the true value of her unrequited love. Even after such a difficult breakup, she had no regrets about those years.
"Hey, what are you two whispering about?" Eileen joined them, laughing, "It's a gathering, don't just talk among yourselves!"
Sophia immediately smiled, "Eileen, I heard you got engaged and didn't even send us an invite. That's not cool!"
Eileen replied sheepishly, "It was just an engagement, a simple dinner with both families. When I get married, not only will I send invites, but I want you all as my bridesmaids!"
"No problem, but just so we're clear, bridesmaids don't give wedding gifts," Crystal joked.
As they all laughed, the room's door opened, and four or five more people walked in, one of them saying, "You guys are early!"
Sophia looked up, her expression stiffening slightly. Among the newcomers was Zoey, who often clashed with Robin back in school, making Sophia less fond of him. Another girl was Miranda, who had also pursued Robin, causing tension between her and Sophia. The others seemed to be close with Zoey.
"You—" Miranda's face darkened.
"Alright, alright!" Crystal stepped between them, "We're here to catch up. If anyone's looking for trouble, they can leave. Don't ruin it for everyone else."
Miranda, her face sour, was pulled to sit down.
Crystal shot her a look, comforting Sophia, "Don't pay her any mind."
Miranda settled down, then raised her glass, "It's been years since we've all been together. Let's toast to this rare gathering."
A few others joined her toast, while Sophia sat back, choosing not to engage.
