Jasmine rubbed her head, making her way to the kitchen.
Sophia was flipping through channels, a rare occurrence since she hardly ever watched TV anymore. She didn't recognize anyone on the screen, so she settled on a comedy show. It did lift her spirits after a while.
Lunch was beef and celery burgers, Sophia's favorite, but she just wasn't feeling it today. Normally, she could devour four in one sitting, but today, one was enough to fill her up.
After heading upstairs, she lay on her bed and tossed and turned a bit—probably the result of a restless night—before quickly falling asleep.
She woke up around 2:30 p.m., got up, and continued helping Finnian sort through model portfolios until 4 p.m., when she finally finished.
Descending the stairs for a drink, she found her mom, Jasmine, just coming in.
Jasmine looked somewhat disappointed. “Looks like our Sophia is out of the running now.”
“What happened?” Aunt Wennie poured Jasmine a cup of tea.
Jasmine sat down. “I just went over to the Gilders' place and saw a girl there looking for Jason. They had lunch at the Gilders', and then I saw them heading out together again.”
Sophia’s expression was indifferent. “I’ve told you before, stop teasing me about Jason.”
“I didn’t know before, but I'll stop now,” Jasmine said regretfully. “It’s such a shame!”
Aunt Wennie asked, “What did the girl look like? Was she prettier than our girl?”
Sophia replied, “Not only prettier but also well-spoken, talented, and a good match for Jason in every way!”
Jasmine reached out to stroke her head, chuckling softly. “My daughter is second to none!”
Sophia felt a bittersweet twinge in her heart and leaned into Jasmine’s embrace, biting her lip with a smile. “That’s the first time I’ve heard you compliment me!”
“Doesn’t it make you feel proud?”
Sophia shook her head. “No, it feels kind of fake!”
Aunt Wennie burst into laughter at this.
She quickly tried to distract herself, munching on an apple and watching a comedy show, leaning her head on her dad’s shoulder to avoid wandering thoughts.
At ten o’clock, Alger and Jasmine got up to head upstairs. Alger noticed Sophia hadn’t moved. “Aren’t you going to bed?”
“It’s only ten. I’ll watch a bit longer. You guys go ahead,” Sophia waved them off.
Alger patted her shoulder. “Even the young shouldn’t stay up too late. It wears down your health.”
“Yeah.” Sophia didn’t argue. “I’ll go to bed in half an hour.”
“Alright.” Alger smiled affectionately and went upstairs.
Aunt Wennie also retired for the night, leaving the living room even quieter except for the TV.
Suddenly, Sophia’s phone vibrated. She picked it up, her heart skipping a beat at the caller ID.
