Unable to resist, Sophia sent Jason a message: *When are you coming home?*
She got out of bed, drew back the curtains, and let the bright spring sunlight flood the room. Stretching with a yawn, she checked her phone again—still no reply from Jason. Sighing, she went to freshen up.
Even after breakfast, as she drove to the office, Jason still hadn’t messaged back.
Maybe he’s having dinner, she thought, trying to rationalize his silence.
All day long, Sophia found herself compulsively checking her phone, hoping for a new notification. Each time she saw nothing under his name, disappointment welled up inside her.
The feeling lingered, heavy and unshakable, through the entire day.
She wanted to call Jason—afraid something urgent had come up, leaving him too overwhelmed to text back. But what if he was asleep on his side of the world? She didn’t want to wake him.
After work, she couldn’t even bring herself to eat dinner. Desperate, she tried video calling him, only to have the call declined.
Just like yesterday, all she got from Jason was a single message: *I’ll get back to you in a bit.*
Sophia replied at once: *I’m fine here. Did something happen over there?*
But he didn’t answer.
She slumped onto the sofa, the phone slipping from her fingers. Snacks sat untouched on the table. Even her favorite TV series couldn’t hold her attention.
At some point, she drifted off on the couch, only to wake in the small hours, shivering. Immediately, she grabbed her phone, terrified she’d missed a message from Jason while she slept.
Her hopeful expression faded in an instant.
Nothing. No text. No missed call. Not even a video message.
A wild thought struck her—maybe messages weren’t going through between their countries. Maybe he wasn’t getting hers, and she couldn’t receive his.
Frustrated, she tossed her phone aside. Sleep was out of the question now.
The rest of the night, Sophia lay awake, nerves fraying. The next morning at work she was drained, barely able to concentrate during a morning meeting. When it ended, Inman stopped by her office, grinning as he asked, “What’s up? You look worn out. Didn’t we already sort out all that stuff online?”
Estelle sounded taken aback. “What’s going on?”
“He hasn’t replied to my messages for two days. I just tried calling and he didn’t answer. I’m really worried!” Sophia’s distress tumbled out without restraint.
She knew Jason wasn’t just a businessman; his background was complicated. If something dangerous happened abroad—
She couldn’t let her mind go there.
“I’ll check right now,” Estelle said quickly. “I’ll get back to you as soon as I know anything.”
“Please, whatever it is, promise you’ll tell me.” Sophia’s voice cracked.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure he’s fine.”
“Okay,” Sophia murmured.
Hanging up, Sophia curled into the corner of the sofa, arms wrapped around her knees, her heart pounding as she waited, second by agonizing second, for Estelle’s reply.
