“Thank you!”
Eugene was practically in tears of joy as he clasped Sylvia’s hands between his own. “You’ll never regret your decision today. I promise.”
A faint smile played at the corners of Sylvia’s lips. “Can I rest now? Let one of the nurses take care of me.”
“No way,” Eugene replied with a laugh. “Now that I’m officially your boyfriend, I have even less reason to leave you in someone else’s care! You just need to rest and try not to talk. I’ll be right here. If I get too tired, I’ll crash on the couch outside. But I’m not going anywhere.”
Sylvia was so worn out that she didn’t argue. She closed her eyes slowly, exhaustion pulling her under.
Her head throbbed, and her stomach ached, but strangely, she almost welcomed the pain—it was something tangible to distract from the emptiness hollowed out inside her.
...
Three days later
Sylvia was recovering well. The doctor said she was almost fully healed and would be completely fine after a bit more rest.
Eugene barely left her side, tending to her with such care and attention that the nurses on her floor were all a little smitten with him.
People from HEGNAN came in every day to visit Sylvia. Each time, they saw Eugene there and quickly realized their relationship was official.
No one was happier than Milanda. She waited until Eugene had stepped out to take a call, then grinned at Sylvia. “Everyone at the office is thrilled, you know.”
“Thrilled about what?” Sylvia asked.
“Afternoon tea for a whole month! We’ve all hit the jackpot,” Milanda teased.
Sylvia rolled her eyes. “Is that all I’m worth to you—a month’s worth of pastries and coffee?”
“Of course not!” Milanda protested quickly. “We’re just happy you’ve finally found someone who makes you happy.”
Sylvia didn’t want to dwell on it. “You’ve all worked so hard while I’ve been gone—juggling work and hospital visits. Please thank everyone for me.”
“Well, don’t keep me waiting too long!”
“I won’t, Mom.”
He hung up and returned to the room just as Milanda was getting ready to leave. He walked her out.
As they stepped into the hallway, Milanda grinned mischievously. “Congratulations, Mr. Winters. Looks like you finally got what you wanted!”
“Thanks for always being there for me,” Eugene replied sincerely. “If you ever need anything, just say the word. I won’t forget it.”
Milanda’s tone grew earnest. “I don’t need your gratitude—just treat our boss right, okay? Don’t you dare let her down.”
Eugene’s expression turned serious. “You have my word. I love her more than anything. I’ll spend my life making her happy.”
“I believe you,” Milanda said, waving as she started down the hall. “Now I’d better get back to the office!”
