Sylvia’s eyes grew unfocused for a moment as she steeled herself, reminding herself that she was just an ordinary caregiver. She walked over to examine his wound.
Even as she sat down, she kept her distance, wary of getting too close.
But the moment she saw his injury, her heart hammered so fiercely it felt as if someone had seized it in their fist. Her brows knit together. “How did this happen?”
Gabriel paused before answering, his tone cool and detached. “One of Giles’ men disguised himself as a maid and slipped into my place.”
Sylvia’s frown didn’t ease. As she cleaned the wound with antiseptic, she couldn’t help but use a touch more force than necessary. Her voice was neither gentle nor harsh. “Let me guess—a very beautiful secret agent?”
Gabriel arched an eyebrow at her, meeting her gaze, but said nothing.
The wound was deep, and Sylvia could tell it had already started to get infected, probably because Gabriel hadn’t bothered to treat it properly. She forced herself to set aside her racing thoughts and focused on cleaning and tending to the gash.
The room fell silent, neither of them saying a word.
Gabriel was never much of a talker. When he was with Sylvia, it was always her filling the silence. Now that she had nothing to say, the quiet between them felt suffocating.
He leaned back against the couch, looking as if the injury belonged to someone else. Even as she cleaned out the pus, he didn’t flinch, just lowered his eyes and watched Sylvia intently.
Her expression was concentrated, brows drawn and lips pressed together, her delicate fingertips occasionally brushing against his arm. Each touch sent a strange tingling through him, like a mild anesthetic.
“The wound is showing signs of infection. You absolutely can’t be careless,” Sylvia admonished, carefully wrapping his arm in gauze. “Don’t get it wet for a few days. Disinfect and change the bandages every day. And no drinking!”
Gabriel’s eyes locked on her face. Suddenly, he said, “Sylvia, do you love Eugene?”
Her hands froze. She bit her lip, struggling to keep her tone even and cool, but a note of defiance slipped in—one she didn’t even realize was there.
“I’ll try to fall in love with him.”
Gabriel’s expression darkened. He turned away, staring at some distant point.
Sylvia tied off the bandage and stood up, gathering the medicine bottles and packing them into the first aid kit. “I’ll return this to the front desk.”
She headed for the door, but as she reached it, Gabriel’s voice came from behind her. “That spy looked a lot like you.”
It was the first time she’d truly lost her temper at him. She doubted it would get under his skin, but it had definitely rattled her own.
All that talk of “pretty faces” and “women who looked like her”—what could possibly threaten the unshakable Lord Gabriel? Yet here she was, still worrying about him.
Her phone buzzed. It was Eugene: [Are you home yet?]
She replied: [Just got in.]
[There’s a new movie out. Want to go see it? I can leave work early tomorrow.]
Sylvia asked: [How’s Grandma Winters?]
[She just woke up. Insisted on coming home, so we just got back. I’ll be free for the movie tomorrow.]
Sylvia hadn’t been in the mood, but something shifted in her mind. She quickly texted back: [Sounds good. Dinner’s on me tomorrow night, but you’re buying the movie tickets.]
