At that moment, a strange feeling washed over him. As he stared at Grace’s stomach, it was as if he could already picture the little girl hidden inside.
Grace held out her pinky finger. “This is our secret. You can’t tell anyone.”
He linked his own pinky with hers and nodded solemnly.
After the holidays, he returned to the academy. He even had a dream once, just like Grace’s, where a little girl was following him. When he turned to look, she would playfully hide, never letting him see her face.
Six months later, he came home and overheard his grandfather on the phone, trying to calm Old Mr. Quintin. He urged him not to be angry, to accept Vivian’s child and the man she loved, saying things might not be as bad as they seemed.
He only understood bits and pieces, but he gathered that Grace had given birth to her child.
It was indeed a little girl.
For a moment, he felt an impulse to go to J City to see her, to find out if she was as playful and lovely as the girl in his dream.
Of course, he never went.
His training was brutal, and he only had a few days off during holidays. He didn't see Grace again, but he heard bits of news about her.
That she had cut ties with her father, Old Mr. Quintin.
That the man she loved had never married her.
That her child was missing.
The moment he heard the little girl was gone, he went straight to J City.
When he saw Grace, she was so thin she was almost unrecognizable. Her beautiful eyes were hollow and gray, her spirit seemed broken. The moment she saw him, she threw her arms around him and sobbed uncontrollably. “Gab, Nana’s gone! My Nana is missing!”
Old Mr. Jarvis smiled. “She didn’t go straight to J City. She’s in C City right now, teaching a class for some children. She was supposed to go to a school in the mountains, but a flash flood washed out the road the day before she arrived. I lent her the estate near Reno Town to use instead. It’s closer to where the children live.”
“Vivian is in C City?” Gabriel asked, surprised.
“Yes. So I want you to go see her. I remember she was always very fond of you. Now that she’s back, and you happen to be here, you should go say hello,” Mr. Carnes said.
Gabriel nodded. “I’ll go right now.”
Old Mr. Jarvis added with a meaningful look, “If you can, convince her to come back to J City after her classes are done.”
Gabriel understood his grandfather’s meaning. “I’ll try to persuade her.”
Old Mr. Jarvis smiled. “Perhaps she’ll listen to you.”
